A friend of mine is looking for one of these oil gauges for the F1 he is restoring. These gauges were also fitted to D types and J1 models. Any leads gratefully received. Thanks Ian.

Nop Douglas.
The D and F (I did not think the J1) had a gauge in the form of a maltese cross.
It is red when no pressure is applied and when the engine gives pressure it switches to white.
Very rare I must add.

I've been looking for several years but have not been able to find one

I am assuming it is John Firth-Smith that is after one of these 'maltese oil gauges' - I suspect Chris Clark can and has done some replicas in the past which may be worth trying?

Chris,

That's the thing I'm talking about. I'll try Chris Clark, thanks for the lead.

Ian.

I contacted Chris and he did produce a batch some time ago. Unfortunately these have all long since been sold. Original gauges are virtually impossible to locate so I have drawn a blank thus far.

This topic is most interesting to me. When Mr. J J Twentyman bought his J1 (J 0312) in 1933, his first contact with the works was to complain about the performance (solution: "fitting a modified cylinder head, which will raise the compression ratio") and the oil pressure gauge (solution: "fit a figured oil tell-tale gauge"). I have a repro "Maltese Cross" gauge as well as a "figured" Jaeger gauge and am wondering which way to go?

Oh, I forgot to add, the charge for replacing the head and gauge was 12s.9p. (65p or $1!!)

Have you asked Patrick Henry?
