JF 5278 (J3589) was purchased by me in December 1980 with a Ford engine. I immediately set out to buy the parts for a J2 engine and they were taken to Baynton Jones in 1981and the first single overhead cam engine installed in 1982. This engine had a Centric supercharger fitted in 1993, it lasted until 2017 including 25 years of racing. The main components are still being used today in other cars. In 2017 Baynton Jones built me a new engine with a big cam head and the latest technology components from formula one. The car had a chassis up rebuild in 1995, thanks to a lady’s Volvo pushing me across a roundabout. This involved four new wings, a new body tub with the original scuttle, a new petrol tank, spare wheel and holder, and when it was finished, re-upholstered seats, carpets and interior panel were fitted. Since then, the Supercharger has been rebuilt twice (vanes and bearings), 5 new racing wheels with thicker spokes (£2500!), gearbox, clutch and back axle (5 star diff) rebuilt and the brakes, already hydraulic, fully overhauled and fitted with a TD master cylinder and Beta Steel drums. The exhaust system includes a four-branch manifold and Stainless-Steel pipe and box designed to give both a nice sound and keep noise below 104 decibels. All mechanical parts have been renewed. The prop shaft is the only part left untouched. The side screens have been re-furbished, there are two tonneau covers and a full dust cover. It has a hood which I folded up and put away in Dec 1980, it can be used as a template. Performance: It has won trophies and events: It reached 100.1 mph in a straight quarter mile dash down the runway at Colerne. I would not recommend a repeat attempt as the steering became very light and I was aiming it not driving it. The fastest lap round the Nurburgring was 14mins 50secs, 57 mph average. On the circuits it will do 70mph in third and 80+ mph on the straights. Circuits it likes; Assen, Brands Hatch, Montlhery, Silverstone and Zandfoort.
