Have recently watched 'Reach for the Sky', movie of Douglas Bader, famous wing commander in the Battle of Britain and thereafter - see you tube link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzB4EjeGvwg
Question: at timeline 1:01:37, a black M-type is in shown driven by Kenneth More who played Bader - registration plate no. YY 3824 - is this car known to the register and still in existence?

It's not in the 2014 printed register, at least not by registration number.

The M-Type does not have the split wind screen. Is this an after market modification? |

At the time the film was made, the M type was owned by Flip Scholten, an M.G. enthusiast of many years standing.
On the question of the split windscreen, I think that a "one piece" screen was available in the early thirties, and was a frequent mod for M Type owners. I see to recall seeing a photograph of John Thornley's M with a one-piece screen.

According to the new register database, which we shall be telling you about quite soon when it is live and up and running, this car is either chassis number 2M3463 or 3464.
It seems more likely that this is 3464. It has a register number, was in Holland until 2004 since when it is understood to be in South Africa.

Flat screens often appear in period photos. Perhaps Shinio and the Double Twelve cars helped set a trend. (Screen on right based on 12/12 pattern).
Of course Jarvis bodied M-types and other special bodied examples had fold flat screens - some appear as aftermarket fittings too. The screen below on YY 3824 might simply be something from a different sports car which more or less fits.
The generous quantity of rubber between the bottom of the screen and the scuttle suggests the possibility of a large gap.

Garry, Very informative, I recently aquired one of these screens with a car that I bought and was unsure of its origins, now I know. For sale if anyone wants one. Regards Ron |

I notice that the bottom of the windscreen on RX 5971 at Brooklands and the red Replica are shaped to the body, but "Bader's" M and the Morris 8 have a rounded bottom to the screen.

Hi Mike, The Red car is meant to be a sort of lookalike to RX 5971 , the windscreen was made by me to suit. Regards, Garry |
