Hi,
I recently bought this speedo, but before I use this gauge for a donor to make my PA odometer, it looks suspiciously like a PB speedo.
Is it?
The unfortunate mercenary question is - does it have more value as a PB speedo if it is one, or a source of milometer parts?
Thanks Paul

Paul, I think the PB speedo is the same but with a brown face. I think its from a motorcycle possibly BSA.

Hi Fred,
That would make me feel a lot better about using it as parts...
What is the recognised source for the brown paint used on the odometer panel and ammeter panel?
Thanks Paul.
BTW - still not got my engine back!! |

The correct brown is Brazilia brown a BL colour. There are some spray cans on ebay but, quite expensive. I have found Vauxhall Brazil brown similar but slightly darker.

Many of the 80 MPH chronometric speedos are used on motorcycles. That is likely what yours is from. I have the exact same need to strip one to replace my ailing PA mileometer. The prices asked on ebay can be quite pricey, so thus far I have been reluctant to spen the money only to fix the trip half.
I do, however, sell gauge face overlays in brown for the PA and PB instruments. But I'm not sure the mileometer windows are in exactly the same place as the PA instrument.

Hi Lew, I think the windows must be in the same place as they are mounted on the same chassis as all Jaeger/Smiths chronometric speedos. Correct me if I'm wrong as I am doing exactly the same as Paul. There is a difference between the Pre/Post war in that the pre war has a pin type cable drive where the post war type has a screw in cable.
What is the cost of your brown odometer overlay?

Thanks - a source of parts it is...
Its already taken apart - the chronometric part is an interesting mechanism.
Cheers Paul |
