I am interested in and researching University Motors, where my car was bought from new (as were many), on the 6th April 1936. There is remarkably little appearing on a web search on UM. One earlier forum discussed the dash plaque. Does anyone have some photographs or links showing the outside or showroom of this main MG dealership pre-war? So far I have read that UM also issued MG plates starting MG 400 in April 1930, until 1948 with MG 7449. Not all cars from UM were issued these plates I read so my car may not have had them. No record on the MMM file for my car unfortunately. Pleased so far to get a reproduction UM dash plaque on the way from Triple-C in the USA, and a remounted UM key fob from Classic Leather Fobs UK also on its way. These items I gather were both supplied by UM on all its cars sold new. Donald McLeod PB0759 |

Hi Donald.
I too, am interested in UM archives , if they exist. My NA was sold through UM . I have heard that it went to New Zealand as a new car , but other sources suggest South Africa. I am keen to establish my cars pre War history , and information from UM will possibly hold the key.
I look forward to an interesting thread !
Regards,
Rod.

Hello Donald.
I have in my file a photo that had been labeled University Motors, Stratton House, London. Perhaps others can verify.

Not all the 'MG' numbers that University Motors had were issued to M.G. Cars I saw an Austin 10 sell for way over it's value simply for the 'MG' number.

Add my interest to University Motors research. My car was sent there from the factory on Nov. 19, 1932. As yet the original UK registration is unknown.

Yes, photo looks correct thanks Phil A friend confirmed that the address is 77 Piccadilly, Mayfair, London Can be google earthed. Friend mentioned that has been a number of car dealers there since. Would need to be a good one to afford the rent at one of the commercial world's most expensive addresses I imagine. Still no MG showroom shots forthcoming. Bit surprising as from the issue of number plates, there must have been hundreds if not a couple of 1000 pre-War MGs sold from UM. I am attempting to contact a well known MG historian still registered on the forum, for help. Regards Donald PB0759 |

Thanks Richard A nice shot from the 50s. Best yet. I imagine the UM showroom looked like a bigger version of the Jarvis showroom, a really good shot of it from the early 30s in Mike Allison's book, The Magic of MG, and I think has appeared in various posts and other places. The showroom floor looks to be plain concrete - for a good reason we know I suspect. In the medium term I would like to make a model of the UM showroom circa 1935. Early MG model kits in the same scale from the same period are proving as hard to find as photos of the UM showroom. Regards Donald PB0759 |

I've just been past Stratton House on the bus: now a branch of HSBC! Fortunately the building is well preserved and unmolested by nasty shop-fronts. Listed, perhaps?

Firstly to add to John Cooper comment, in the Lagonda Club we have 10 Lagonda with an MG Number the first MG1941 was registered in 1932 and the last MG6768 was registered on 12 June 1939; so there were certainly a good few non MGs with that prefix letter combination! Then my MG K1 was supplied by University Motors as the Main Agent on 24-5-33, then delivered to Mann Egerton & Co Ltd, 156 New Bond Street, W1 who the supplied it to Ingo Simon with the Registration ALA 871 on the 1st June 1933. I guess Mann Egerton licenced it. Christopher H

National tyres says "MG 4338 has been identified as a 1935 BENTLEY". Perhaps it is now.
