Well, after more than thirty years, the annual MGOC/MGCC Regency Run has now passed into history. Strange really, as the total number of cars entered does not seem to have dropped significantly, although the entry of old M.G.s - Vintage, MMM and TAs TBs and TCs has withered away almost to nothing. Yesterday's run started from Kempton Park Race Course in Surrey and ended up on the Madeira Drive at Brighton by way of an interesting route which included climbs of Box Hill near Dorking and Ditchling Beacon just north of Brighton.

The two guys who started the event over thirty years ago were there, David Diplock in his J2 and Geoff Radford in his 18/100 Tigress and the total attendance of MMM cars was :-

David Diplock. J2 J2819. Reg. No: JB 5201.
Martin Latimer. 2 seat NA NA0632. Reg. No: BNA 230.
Dave Jarvis. L2. L2030. Reg. No: MG 2517.
Colin Henderson. J2 J4323. Reg. No: OB 5374.
Peter and Averille Lyne. Ex F Salonettee. F0322. Reg. No: PJ 1713
(rebuilt as 2 seater)
Chris Hobbs. K1 K0334. Reg. No: ALA 871

These numbers do not compare favourably with an MMM entry of perhaps thirty or forty cars only five or so years ago.
The reason given for the demise of the event was that there are now so many other similar events taking place but the density of traffic flowing into and out of Brighton on a hot Sunday in May probably has something to do with it, as several drivers commented on the traffic hold-ups in getting into the town.

Good to see you yesterday Colin yesterday, I’m afraid my back axle on the 18/80 gave way on Friday, so I ended up piloting Chris Keevill in his Supersports.
The attendance has been in decline ever since I started coming, (I knew it would be my fault). I looked at the entry lists since I first went in 2003. They are as follows:-
2003 total 500 (VR) 7 (Triple M) 26 (Pre-war) 7
2004 total 661 (VR) 8 (Triple M) 27 (Pre-war) 11
2005 total 469 (VR) 7 (Triple M) 25 (Pre-war) 8
2006 total 456 (VR) 8 (Triple M) 20 (Pre-war) 9
2007 total 354 (VR) 4 (Triple M) 18 (Pre-war) 2
2008 total 370 (VR) 8 (Triple M) 16 (Pre-war) 4
2009 total 296 (VR) 3 (Triple M) 10 (Pre-war) 5
2010 total 309 (VR) 7 (Triple M) 16 (Pre-war) 6
2011 total 314 (VR) 4 (Triple M) 13 (Pre-war) 3
2012 total 303 (VR) 3 (Triple M) 8 (Pre-war) 4
2013 total 243 (VR) 3 (Triple M) 5 (Pre-war) 5
I seem to have mislaid by 2014 programme.
2015 total 243 (VR) 4 (Triple M) 5 (Pre-war) 4
2016 total 323 (VR) 4 (1 FTA) (Triple M) 9 (Pre-war) 2
A declining interest, bolstered this year by it being the last one.
As far as I can ascertain it is Brighton Council that didn’t want us anymore, it is alleged that it cost them lost revenue form Parking. Who knows?
I am afraid we were rather fed up with the traffic getting into Brighton and cyclists on the early part of the course which we left to avoid them. Many of those speaking on the microphone complained of cyclists as well.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next year, I certainly don’t want to go to Brighton again.
