Having removed the old paint and rust from my front axle I find that the surface finish is not as forged but has been polished, particolarly so outboard of the spring pads. Is this normal?
Also, on the top face in the middle is stamped the numbers 1651 & 73. does anyone know the significance of these?

Maurice.

Maurice,
The outer ends of the axle are the most highly stressed and it is no unusual to find that these areas have in the past been polished, this removes the small stress raisers and also makes visual inspection quite easy. The numbers stamped into the top surface are identification Nos. the 1651 I think is simply a numerical number, the 73 , if I remember correctly is for a P type, 72 for a J type etc. It was all explained in one of the year books some time ago.
