Can someone tell if MG used a #146 headlamp on any of the prewar cars? What is the difference in the 140 to the 146 headlamp?

Gary,
I can find no reference to the 146 lamps in the Lucas catalog usage charts. However, there is a note therein that the 146 was replaced by the 140. The 140 series was used on the P types and hundreds of other vehicles. The K624 (Rotax?) or Lucas LB150S is listed as the application on your J2.

Hello Gary,
The 1939 edition of the Lucas-CAV-Rotax Spares catalogue only lists the Lucas LD146 or LBD146 headlamp for the 1935-36 Vauxhall 12hp, 14hp and "Big Six" models.
No MGs are listed with "146" headlights. Furthermore the headlamp component parts listings do not identify any differences between the "140" and "146" units.

Interestingly the "140" is listed as a replacement for the "146".

The main difference seems to be the type of bulb fixing in the reflector as the diameter (7 13/16") & fluting (5/8") of the domed lamp glasses are listed the same. It appears that only stationary reflectors were fitted, as there are no dipping types listed for the 146.

I suspect that the chrome headlamp housings could have been different, for example the 148s I have, have a deeper tear-drop (longitudinal axis) length.

Hope this helps.

Bruce.
