S & V no longer stock road springs. For my J2/J4 replica, they have recommended I contact Jones Springs, their previous suppliers. My question is was the same springs supplied for each model, or did perhaps the J3 / J4 have a stronger temper ? Much appreciated.

The J4 had rear spring unique to the J4 and C types. Front springs were common to J4, C type, PA and PB and TA.
The J3 had the same rear spring as the J2 but there was an extra leaf in the front spring on a J3 to that of the J2.
There is a section on Spring Data in "Blower", if you have a copy, showing all data and dimensions.

Chris. When you get a copy of "Blower" bear in mind that Brost Forge in North London also do road springs. I have also come across a master blacksmith (a member of the Guild of Blacksmith's) who does a lot of springs for horse-drawn carts. I would have thought that he could manage a set of road springs for a J if he is provided with a set of drawings (contained in "Blower") and he is close enough to call in to discuss the project. He is based at Ashurst Wood near East Grinstead. I have no personal experience of him yet, but when I next need road springs I intend to talk to him.

It's Brost Forge every time for me. The have made J/P/TA/TC/TD and TF springs for me over the years.

PS They will also supply with an oversize 'eye' (5/8") if asked to allow for the insertion of a 1/16" bronze bush. |

Excellent, Thankyou Robin, Colin & John. I will contact Brost Forge on Monday, and for the information on the spring types for each model. I can now move forward.

By the way Chris, the spring makers will tell you that they can only supply metric thicknesses these days. I know of some people who have the metric thicknesses reduced on a surface grinder before tempering to the correct thicknesses originally specified. Added cost, I know but if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.

I do not have a copy of ' Blower ', if one is available for purchase. Thankyou. I will copy to the ' Wanted ' section also.

Chris,
You can check with Chris Wann, but he still uses Imperial. He can't however get 7/32 inch because it is no longer available.
