I am looking for the following books and literature:
Maintaining the breed by John Thornley.

Institute of Automobile Engineers paper "Small Racing Cars" February 1935 H. N. Charles.

Triple M yearbook 2009.

Plus any other information about MG M type RX5971 'Shino'.

I am rebuilding a M type and I rather like the appearance of Shinio and would like to make a faithful copy. I am intending to use the car for VSCC trials and think it would look the part.

I have searched the archives and that is where I found the above list of material to study. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received.
Thanks

Hello Derek,
I have the book you are looking for. The Institution of Automobile Engineers.
It is from 1935 and has about 900 pages including the MG-photo plates + others.
Outside a bit "used", but inside as new.
I would sell it for the 12 Pounds which I paid long ago.
The problem ist the postage, as uninsured parcel it would be 8 Pounds.

So if you don't get one offered from England, please come back to my offer.
Gerhard

Many UK academic libraries - and even some public libraries - offer online access to the Proceedings of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, in which that paper by HN Charles appears. There's now a scheme called "Access to Research" which allows people to use academic libraries, even if they're not a registered student, and you can download and print any document to which they subscribe. Some public libraries offer it too. Alternatively, you could get in touch with the Library at the IMechE, who are very helpful, and should be able to supply you with an off-print. Or you could even go there in person - it's an absolutely wonderful library! I can particularly recommend their almost pristine sets of Autocar and Motor - anyone who's had the experience of using the ones at Beaulieu will understand ...

Derek,

The VSCC library may well be able to help.

David.

As a left ponder, I have spent hours looking for the cited article. It appears that either I need to be a member of the IMecE or pay a fee to download the document. Does anyone have a copy they can email or a link to the article which can be accessed?

Thank you! That will teach me to look there first. I never thought about doing so.

Thank you for the replies, strangely the more obscure book - the 1935 IAE book, is the one I have had an offer of. I shall buy Gerhard's book from him.
Still looking for the other book if anyone has a copy they want to part with.
I did try the I Mech E - I am a member but could not find a 'on-line' copy. VSCC library is another good suggestion, not sure if books can be taken off site though.

There's quite a few copies of Maintaining the Breed available on eBay at the minute. Here's one for starters:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAINTAINING-THE-BREED-THE-SAGA-OF-MG-RACING-CARS-1950-1st-EDITION-HB-BOOK/253396147576?hash=item3aff965d78:g:AeMAAOSwLghZqUhY

And as Richard has already stated, the 2009 Yearbook can be obtained through the library:

By the way, how do we know the car pictured is 'Shinio'?

That is a very good question. You are possibly better placed that I to answer that. There has been an awful lot of talk about Shinio on the Pre war Minor forum https://prewarminorforum.com/shinio-t1704.html

My plan is to build a car that is very similar in appearance to the one in the photo at the top of this posting. It will also carry the registration mark MG1930 so that will set the cat amongst the pigeons.

Oh yes, thank you for the link to E Bay.

A fine plan, if you ask me, Derek!
Fascinating topic of the Minor forum too, thanks for the link!
