I am in need of an NB two-seater bodytub for the restoration of NA 931. I can supply a set of original hinges, toolbox, gas tank, and windscreen as these have been described as the hard to find parts. Is there someone that can be recommended for the project? I have already spoken with Steve Gilbert and he no longer has access to the wood patterns. Any help would be appreciated. I am located in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Hi Jack

Tom Metcalf has an NB 2 seater he has restored, maybe he can give you some indication of whom he used?

I had a new body built for my old car NA0960 - it was a long time ago and I recall the person who did the work was based in Somerset. I think his main work was on Riley’s. All the invoices etc went with the car to it’s new owner in Australia. The main dimensions of the body are printed in the old reprints from the period Autocar magazine which were obtainable in the UK. I have these and could email you the info if this helps?

It is great to note your intention to rebuild the car as standard, only 92 two seat NBs were produced.

Best regards

George

Maybe I'm wrong but I have a memory of Andy King http://prewarmgparts.co.uk/ stating in a post on here that they had purchased some or all of Rique Llinares business when he retired a year or 2 ago.
He was an MG body tub specialist.
Either way, Andy King or Barry Walker in UK or Tom Metcalf http://www.safetyfastrestoration.com/ are all worth contacting for a lead.

George and James - Thank you for the leads. I did speak with Tom earlier today and we are exploring alternate sources for the tub. I will try Andy and Barry. I remember when I restored my NA I purchased a wood kit that Reed Yates kindly brought back to me on his flight home. I too have lost the records of the purchase, but will check with Reed to see if he remembers the source. George, yes I would like to have the NB body dimensions when you have time.

Not able to be 100% sure, of course, but a Riley bodywork man in somerset is likely to be Bruce Bellamy...

That is the man - Bruce Bellamy!

I am not sure he would have patterns as he produced two N 2 seat bodies using the remains of the original body from NA0960 as a pattern.

The second body was for Derek Davies who was rebuilding the ex Crawford trials NA -which he recently sold.

When I spoke with Andy King last month (at Stoneleigh) re some doors, he indicated that the "...interviewing for competent person or persons in the near future to operate the machinery and manufacture." was taking longer than hoped so although having the kit, they were not yet operational.

Hello Jack

I have found the 2 seat dimension details as printed in an Autocar Road test of the N 2 seater on 24th August 1934 - as attached. I hope the image is clear enough for you. If not I can email it to you?

Also attached is a picture of the finished body tub as picked up from Bruce Bellamy many years ago! The body was built on a spare chassis which I think Bruce must have owned.

There is a lot of shape and I have seen some 2 seat Ns where the rear panel is wrong, including not having the spare wheel slightly recessed and not having the chrome finisher strip along the lower edge of the rear panel. On the 4 seat cars this strip is one piece whereas on the 2 seat body there are two separate strips; required to clear the lower edge of the spare tyre.

George and others - Thank you for the dimensions and the photo. I would love to speak with Bruce Bellamy. Does anyone have his contact information? I did not find him using Google. Tom and I were talking to a fellow at Amelia Island a few weeks ago who has an N type two seater without the spare tyre recess, so someone did do that one wrong. Must be careful. Thanks.

The Riley man mentioned might actually be Allen Clear in West Chinnock.

Ed Taylor also recently rebuilt a 2 seater NA. I believe he added some improvements to stop th doors sagging... certainly his doors shut beautifully.

Bruce Bellamy was based in Merriott, Somerset certainly until 6 or 7 years ago. I visited him there and saw the various patterns he had for MMM MG's which I understood then he was disposing of. He had just completed the bodywork for a Riley Brooklands and I was hoping for the discarded and battered tail piece as a souvenir as this was the very car I had bought as an 18 year old in 1957 (for £75) His phone number was 01460 74574. Hi Jack, I am doing a 2-seater NA. I (try to) do my own woodwork, based on sketches/dimensions by Mike Holifield. I can send you these per Email, drop me a message with your address please?

Regards, Andrys
