Beware....

There is a Tigress mascot on e-bay currently.

Sent a message asking the seller to explain why they sold one just like it in July and now have another for sale in almost exact condition. No response.

Most likley a reproduction though listed as circa 1925

Best,

I believe it was Doug Harris that had some of these reproductions made around 2012. They are very nice, but are certainly not originals, nor was he selling them as such.

I am sure it was NOT the Doug Harris I know who owns an 18/80.
One thing the Tigress mascot were not produced in 1925 and the earliest would have been 1931 at a push. There are many reproductions of this item around. I couldn't find it, where is it?

I am certain that it was Doug Harris that I bought it from. I'm not sure through whether it was in 2002 or 2012 when I purchased it, although I believe it was at Silverstone in 2002. If Doug didn't make it, at least he was involved in my acquiring it.

Lew- your mascot was from a batch of copies that the late Bev Hicks had cast in about 1998/9. It may well have come to you via Doug Harris who has an 18/80.
"Cowley-wenha-o" on EBay, has sold four (4) identical reproduction mascots so far this year, but I do not think they are from the batch that Bev had made.
Last year, "missynewton" sold five (5) similar mascots on EBay, with prices ranging up to £500.
Caveat emptor!.

Snap- this is my "copy" Tigress mascot.

The issue of course is seller falsely claiming an object to be something it is not.
This Mascot seller is successfully taking advantage of those in this club.

Does ebay ban sellers ?

Dear Brian and Forum:

Is there a ebay link to this or the other items please?
This must be a very good example of sharp practice.
The next question is what can be done?
I for one avoid ebay for this reason.
Greed is a very powerful brew.
All the best.

eBAY has a "Report item" facility where you can explain what is wrong with the description. Not sure what happens then though.

Similarly, recently there have been for sale on EBay within a few weeks of each other and sold by the same person, two BRDC car badges which appeared to be identical. Neither had mounting holes drilled and the seller stated that the age of the badges was ‘unknown’ !! Both sold on auction for approximately £160 each.

I was tempted but my common sense ( ! ) told me they were copies. I have the distinct impression that quite a few copies of rare badges are coming on to the market. I just wish people could be honest and state what they are, that’s all.

Dear Nick and Forum:

Ebay also offer a money back guarantee.
This must be for the buyers protection.
What is the position in this sort of case.?
Description and price must be the drivers.
All the best.

In this case I contacted ebay and noted the item was not as described.
They do not allow an explanation, only a predetermined form with general response choices.

Thus on their form it appears to not be possible to identify an item as a fake without bidding on the fake item.

As Chris noted my common sense told me it was another fake. What cemented it as fake was the seller not responding to my request for them to explain how they happen to have so many extremely rare mascots which they sell.

Another indicator was that someone had called them shameless liars & frauds on a purchase of supposed antique Chinese bronze vases, and noted they do not accept returns.

That seller does not appear to be offering any mascots at the moment but if you click on any item then scroll down to the description, at the top of that box on the right hand side (just above "item number") you will see "Report item". That it the place to alert them. As I say it might only result in the item having to be removed but you never know.
