Hi Everybody!

I got a heavy box in UPS today. Inside was a J2 (actually J1) diff with a little crack in the housing. I think I may have enough bits to build a new one with a new CW&P, but if somebody has an extra - like J2 replaced with P-Type..... just an assembled diff in decent condition would be great.

I can have DHL pickup for its new life around Hilton Head Island.

Thanks! tommm in very sunny & warm Ohio

PS, after a quick examination of this mess I see no reason why it happened. However, the owner said the pinion was a mess and we didn't get that bit.

Tom,
In my cellar is a diff. that most problably came from a M type with 9/44 gears.
It has 8 holes for mounting in the rear axle.
If that is of any help?
Paul

Hi Gents,

Many thanks for the suggestions, including Ebay! I have several email leads from the Forum and will see how they pan out.

Hi Tom.

What is the difference between a J1 and a J2 diff?

Sam,

The good ol' J Type Parts List shows no difference between the diff assemblies for the J1 and the J2.

Sam,

I was only making a small point that we need a J2 diff although the car is actually a J1. Like Simon says...... same thing.

Thanks Tom.

This is the diff on eBay described as -
"MG MMM J-Type P-Type Differential 37/7 = 5. 2 Ratio"

Is the casing possibly from a Morris eight?

This is a Morris 8 diff; looks much the same to me and is also marked 8:43.

I would expect one of these would be much easier to find and the J internals should fit.

This cast iron example was kindly donated by a Morris Eight but not before time.

The crown wheel is sadly beyond help even from JB Weld.

Has the cast iron casing a strength advantage over the alloy casing? Being relatively common (over 50,000 Morris Eights produced) is it perhaps a reasonable alternative for a J1 or J2 ?

Sam the Morris 8 diff case in cast iron is a good alternative. Only problem is that it will only take the smaller 155mm crown wheels, which limits the choice of ratios. Geoff . PS will be in touch in August , we are still getting wet and windswept.

Sam, much stronger - I managed to break an alloy one in use. Plus it has a double row pinion bearing. Best one with the 7/37 cw+p.
