David Rawlinson has asked if I will post some photos of my J4 recreation. So here it is.
Started building it when I was 16, ran it hard for 20 years, been laid up for 5 years and 10 days ago it went back on the road following a full nut and bolt strip down, body part repanelled, full engine rebuild and a new paint job in the same colours as previous.
Some info in the car;
it’s a J1 ex salonette, finally left the University Motoes showroom in 1935!!!! Clearly a salonette was not everyone’s cup of tea!,
full race prepared J type engine to 900cc using a Chromidium block, modern crank, Carrillo rods, custom flywheel with modern diaphragm clutch, J4 water pump, head has marginally raised compression, reshaped and balanced combustion chambers, tulip valves, polished and matched ports. VMGP J4 oil filter, block to rear housing torsion brackets, J4 sump reservoir, oil pump, expanded water jackets, intermediate rocker shaft supports and a high torque VMGP Brooklands Cam.
Gearbox is the C/J4 ENV Manual crosstube Type. Steering is J4 style divided track system, 4 star diff at 7/36 ratio. Bags of torque. Blower is a Godfrey Marshall Mk21 prototype, producing up to 12 Ibs on a VMGP 1 5/8th dis Pre war style SU carb. Autopulse fuel pumps (although are only there for fuel to pass through) to a twin back to back SU Jaguar pump mounted in the J1 rear undertray. 12 inch lightened brakes with brass gauze insets. L type polished front axle. Duplex shocks at front.
Just running the engine back in on 1 inch carbs for the next few hundred miles
Great to have if back on the road and like new! Trouble free so far in first 250 miles and came 2nd last week at Newby Hall, after an MG TD

Racing....I suspect not as with a full time day job, the rest of the time is taken up with helping keeping everyone peoples mmm cars on the road and track! There are also 3x 6 Cyl projects and another J4 recreation calling for my attention. Racing seems a long way off sadly!

John The seats were Mike Collingburn, done 30 odd years ago. The rest of the trim I have recently re-done. Added the J4 arm rests, supplying the bases to James Collingburn 6 months ago. I was concerned they would not be able to find a good leather match as when I had the seats trimmed, I asked for the grainiest leather they could find so as to create a patina and seats with some character as opposed to plain flat colour finish as this is not a Rolls Royce. As luck would have it, they still had the original leather off-cuts from my seats and I had not realised how much battering my elbows use to get. Now, its bliss!
Sourcing the leather-cloth was difficult and took months to find the right colour and texture. The old rexine is no longer available and the new Turkish import substitutes these days are not as durable and colours have changed.
The paintwork was undertaken by my local painter chap who is 1.8 miles away across the back fields. He is one of the best painters in the north, he also likes rubbing down which seems odd to me!! We have 14 coats applied and each flatted off. He is meticulous and what's more, is affordable. Has a full oven and paint mixing facility. He can also sort light panel repair work. Happy to pass the details on for Len Bell to anyone who is interested in having a first class MMM paint job. He has recently completed a PA, TD and will shortly be completely respraying my sister's J1 tourer before my F1/2 later in the year.
Climbing in an out of the J type Nigel is not an issue once you have the knack. Pleased I have added the cut-away though in the off-side!
Thanks for everyone's kind comments. Leaving the workshop at so many occasions between 12:00 midnight and 4:30am now all seems to have been worth it!

It is the climbing in that I would concentrate on, as with a bob-sleigh. I would want to get in as quickly as possible every time I came close to the car and would be reluctant to get out again!
