At the Triple-M Register Committee meeting at Abingdon last weekend, we discussed at length the question of the terminology used by the Register to describe Triple-M cars that are no longer in the form in which they left the factory.
The conclusions were;
> that the existing Register Guidelines which lay down the principles under which the Register operates and which govern the way in which the Register records cars, will continue to apply.
> that we embrace all Triple-M cars in whatever form and will always respect the efforts and dedication of owners who preserve, restore and maintain Triple-M cars.
> The register accepts that they are unable to stop individual members describing cars incorrectly in various scenarios outside of its control. However the register strongly encourages Triple M owners to describe their cars according to its guidelines, the principle being that every car is primarily identified by its chassis number
> that the Triple-M Register committee, (whilst admiring them), will not get involved in judging the completeness, authenticity and quality of reproduction/replica cars built on Triple-M chassis which of course vary from 'outward look-alikes' to 'exact to an original in every respect'. This is not least because the minutae of what was 'factory original' has sometimes been lost in the mists of time even for the ordinary road cars let alone the competition models.
> as far as the Register's database of cars, the Listing of Triple-M cars themselves and other Register publications such as the Yearbook and the Bulletin are concerned, we will continue to identify and describe cars using the factory model/chassis number with appropriate notes e.g. "rebuilt in the style of....". For example, a D type chassis that now carries the appearance of a C type will continue to be described as a "D type rebuilt in the style of a C type".
> The Register Committee does review the Guidelines regularly and will shortly be issuing guidance relating to the preferred method re-stamping original chassis if and when this becomes necessary to meet the requirements of statutory registration authorities in countries outside the UK.
