David Hutchison posted these superb 1930s photos in the Vintage Register group on Facebook the other day. I just can’t stop looking at them, so I thought I’d share them on here for you all to enjoy too! Possibly Shelsley Walsh.

Good morning Cat and all - amazing photos!
Just had a quick look at the records:- WS 7872 is NA0908 a 4 seater NB which is not known to have survived. RS 719 - not recorded in the files. W0 758 - ditto RX 9537 is F0352 which is not known to have survived. JK 1415 - not known to have survived - this is a special bodied M type - Jarvis?
Given all the M types present Mike Dalby will have a lot of fun with this to-day!!!

Sorry about the duplication - the file took ages to download and I tried to speed it up by clicking the Post buttontwice¬ |

Incredible, uplifting photos Cat. I think I can count 18 M Types in the last photo, most with their original hoods up and three Sportsman's Coupes, the near one dwarfed by a 1926 Chummy! Simpler, happy days. |

Definitely Shelsley Walsh. The Soorts Car magazine featured one or two of these images in their report on the event. I think1936 going from memory. I’ll dig the article out. |

I think the photo depicting the 18/80 JO 770 was taken by Bill Brunell at a pre-war Blackpool rally. See page 158 of The Golden Age of British Motoring by Roy Bacon.
As was the muddy photo above it. Note the MG Enclosure banners. |

Ian. How interesting. The Golden Age of British Motoring is infamous for having at least 80 incorrect captions out of a total 189 pages - so it might or might not be the Blackpool Rally. My own guess is that all of these photographs are of Shelsley Walsh.

Cathelijne and Forum:
As others have said; " great photographs!" A link to more facebook photos would be much appreciated. Accurate location details and dates a bonus. All the best.

Indeed, there are not many hills in sight of Blackpool.
It must be elsewhere.

I know it well, but these hills are far too close. Try a Google map visit and see what you can find.

Ian . I was not doubting that the photos were at Shelsley l was just replying to your comment about no hills near Blackpool. I accept you do need a clear day to see the tower from the Forest of Bowland. Hope l have not mis-understood you. |

No, you haven't! Anyway, I was brung up near Stockport and my father's works day out were always to Blackpool. We went too, following in the 'executive limousine'. He went off to buy several rounds of drinks and we took the tram up and down the promenade (and squashed pennies on the rails)! I know it well.
Seeing Blackpool tower from the hills is one thing, Blackpool is on the Fylde plain, great for growing vegetables but not a real hill until, as you say, the Vale of Bowland

And, not forgetting WD 7518 which appears to be PA 0949 and presumably still with us. A pity so many of the reg numbers are indistinct. Incredible gathering of MG's for those days. Simon C. |

I believe RS 719 is actually WS 719 (PA1098) and WO 758 is actually WD 7518 (PA0949). The others in that first picture of which the registration numbers are legible are WP 1494 (D0375), BGO 131 (an unknown PA) and US 6769 (PA1026). I believe SS 4567 to be a TA.
The second pic shows DG8535 (PA0255) on the far right.
In the third pic I believe the Jarvis M-type on the far left (for us) of which 027 is just visible, is MG 1027 (2M2787) and the F-type just behind the one you've already mentioned (RX 9537/F0352) seems to be DO 9914 (F0682), a Salonette. WL 9229 = often photographed in the '30s, yet unknown; WM 6858 = another unknown, just like JK 1415 which you already mentioned.

Re the Golden Age, Brian Goodman published a list of caption corrections in the VSCC Bulletin a number of years ago. I photocopied the list and stuck it inside the flyleaf of my copy. I checked for page 158 and found no correction. Of course that doesn't make the caption correct!
Looking at the contour of the distant hills, fields and tree lines on the right of picture two, they look remarkably similar to those behind the telegraph pole in the middle of picture three, so I conclude that all four were indeed taken at Shelsley - perhaps a two day event? The first two photos do look like a different day from the second two, particularly with respect to the mud! I'm going to add this correction to Brian's list!
Incidentally, Ken Hutchison married Bill Brunell's daughter Kitty, so I guess David is a relative? |
