I am in process of fitting a new clip (thanks to Bob Hudson) to retain the dipstick for the oil level in the P rear axle. I find that the coil spring joining the top part to the bottom rod which has the max/min levels appears to have been stretched - or is it designed like this?

Can anybody please tell what is the distance from the bottom of the knob which rests on the clip to the top of the max oil level groove?
