I am about to paint the brake drums on my PA and would like some advice on the type of paint I should use please.
I have considered the following alternatives:-
(1) Black Chassis paint - probably sprayed
(2) Black cellulose over a grey primer
(3) Black powder coat
(4) Black brake drum paint from Frost
Does anyone have any ideas?

Personally

I would not powder coat brake drums -
Spray them black - that way they can be touched in easily when the paint burns off!
I use black chassis paint - Smoothrite Satin Black works quite well.
Not had any experience of the "brake drum paint" sounds promising.

Robert,

Black stove enamel works well, and I have also used the following process:

1. Bead blast with Honite glass bead
2. 2-pack etch prime wash coat - optional
3. Coat of Bondaprimer
4. Paint with Blackfriars QD90 black metal paint. I put QD90 straight on to Bondaprimer, but you may prefer to use an undercoat.

Both the products in 3 and 4 have been mentioned in other postings - the Search facility will find them.

I have used black smooth Hammerite on the NB and it has stood the test of time very well. It does not require any primer and 2 thick coats have sufficed. The trick is to paint it on quickly then let it dry - no overbrushing!

Obviously preparation is all and cleaning up the drums prior to painting is an arduous task!

I agree with George. Both my PA and the Cresta NB have their drums painted in "Smoothrite" black. It does suffer a bit more chipping than some other treatments but has the advantage of easy touch-up.

If you want them to be the original colour they should be black.

Peter.
