I have attached an extract from The Austin Magazine of January 1932 and wondered whather anyone knew about the 'MG' Challenge Trophy' that it talks about and is illustrated. I shall draw a veil over which team won the Trophy but would really be interested to know more about the inaugural 1931 event and whether the Trophy may still exist?
Many thanks in advance...
Hugh

Strange that in 1931 an Austin won , but by 1935 it was for "For Best Performance by a M.G." perhaps 'they' didn't like a competitor winning?

Can I just *bump* this post, please. I really am interested in this award and event. Does anyone have any leads? The Bonhams Trophy that Ian has pointed to certainly does look similar but its difficult to be certain as the two images are of different sides..
many thanks...

Aren't we looking at two different trophies? The article describes the winner "struggling to the cloakroom with it, for the trophy is a large and heavy one", whilst the Bonhams example is a desk-top ornament. The pedestals are different too: wood only in the supposed smaller one, whilst the larger is topped with marble, which probably contributes to the weight.

Mild speculation. I wonder whether there was *the* Trophy, large, heavy, marble, etc. Then a smaller replica that the winners kept having returned the original..

This is from the 1932 programme of the LCC Relay race - there were evidently replicas presented too..

Thanks Graham, a little more info to add to the 'file'...
What do the team think? This is the award that Bonhams sold.. Is this the same casting?

At 16cm long, this,I think, is one of the replicas mentioned in the LCC relay programme. Maybe MG had a quantity made and used them as awards to give to lesser local events.

I should have said, the other side is pictured elsewhere In the program and it is the same as the one pictured above. My guess is that they were not necessarily exclusive to MG but offered to who ever would buy one, To be mounted as an award or ornament.
