I want to fit a grab handle on the NA to help frightened passenger, I have seen on line fitted to Michael Allison's NA a nice plain curved handle, can anyone advise where to buy? another question has anyone fitted a quick release steering wheel?

Can't help you re. the grab handle, but the Goddard's P Type has a quick release steering wheel fitted (not sure of the fitment) & I have one on the Bannell J2 which uses an original boss, but locates with a cam profiled through-bolt onto a flat on the column itself. I think both methods (I think) involve modifying the column. Charles or Ian would no doubt be able to advise further on their fit.

The S V W Saloon range had a removable steering wheel as far as I know. One of those could be adapted, that is if you can find one. I think that you would need a splined column rather than one with a key though for it to work easily.

Perhaps this is what you were thinking of ?
Paul, this system didn’t require a spline, like the SVW series which had a splined steering column to allow for longitudinal adjustment.

Chris, Paul and Forum:

Further to the quick release steering wheel thread.
Looks a very interesting solution.
Are there any downside issues?
If so ;what are they.
Plus is this steering wheel still available?
And where ; please.
All the best.

John, the reason that I mentioned using a spline was that if a key is used it would have to be held captive in the column shaft, maybe a BA or other very small csk screw could used to tap the shaft and then screwed through the key to hold it in. If you removed the quick release wheel and the key dropped out without you noticing, you could be in a bit of a mess in the first corner! With a spline no key would be needed and a lot safer.
Paul.

Hello, John.

The steering wheel is not for sale, the photographs are from my file and I cannot remember from where I got them.
I am using a similar quick release unit ( probably from a VA ) which has a very short clamping bolt and I need to make a longer one for fitment to my K type steering wheel.
I will be fitting a countersunk screw to secure the key as mentioned by Paul.

Regards,

Chris

The Works trials cars were fitted with this style of Victorian bow grab handle. They are available on the Internet under that description. This may be similar to what you have seen on Mike Allison’s Monte Carlo NA.
Overall length is 6”/152mm

The passenger grab handle on my NB is exactly the same as the one John has posted and I'm told it's much more comfortable to 'grab' than the more common MG badged one on my PB.
It was on the NB when I got it twenty some years ago from Tony Jenkins. I suspect it was on when he found the mostly original and complete car for restoration sometime in the '70/80s.
Having not seen one like it before I didn't realised it could possibly have been on the car from new.
Thanks for the info, John.

Terry.
