Whilst refitting my front hubs today I had inconsistencies the allignment of the castelations and the split pin hole which led to an investigation. The problem appears to be that the centre of the washer is not flat, causing the nut to seat only at its edge or even only on the points of the hexagon if the nut has been skimmed to get the holes to allign. This is not good engineering practice, that washer must be flat in a situation like this. Turning thr centre of the washer to produce a flat face and reinstating the chamfer on the nut cured the problem. My washers are believed to be original,I don't know what modern replacements are like, hopefully they are flat.

I subsequently found the flat on back of the other washer was only just bigger in diameter than the bore of the bearing giving only a very small contact area.
