I need a pair of rocker shafts for an engine build. Im happy to have a pair of used ones that aren’t too worn. I thought I had a pair but all mine are M/J type.

S&V list them. If new run a thin chainsaw file down the insides to clear any burrs. Nick.

S&V do list them that’s true but they are out of stock, hence the wanted advert. |

I must have a pair somewhere having rebuilt a head with new everything a few years ago and I am not very good at getting rid of stuff.
I will have a dig around and see what I can find. It may not be for a day or so though. |

Thanks Terry but I’ve talked to Richard Hardy and he isn’t making any for a while. Thanks for looking Nigel and when you’ve had a cleaned up your pair, message me and we will go from there. Cheers. |

Tim, I have sent you an E-mail, but I could not work out how to attach a photo to an E-mail through the Forum so I have uploaded them here:

I can make these again if the material costs comes in at the right price. Here lies the problem compared to the price of completed shafts being offered years ago.
At the moment, nobody has rocker haft tubes in stock for our cars.
Looking at current raw material supplier costs, there would be no change out of around £50 just for the material to make one pair. Sadly, three of the specialist tubing suppliers are no longer trading and the grade of material now appears to be limited to 4130 molychrome. Vintage MG Parts have in the past used this material for rocker shafts and which offered an unrivalled quality compared to other specs including A99 and EN1075. 4130 Molychrome is excellent for our application but the downside is, it is slow to machine up due to its hardness composition.
On top of the material price is the cost of centreless grinding of each tube and then machining, deburring etc.
The end price would end up being somewhere around £120 for a pair, 6 cylinders being around around 30% extra, (no VAT), unless of course some new cheaper price on tubing can be sourced.
With 4 different lengths of tubing required for the various MMM models and with it not being possible to centreless grind double or triple lengths at a time due to potential run-out issues, pre-orders would need to determine cutting up of the tube in advance. No surplus stock would be carried due to the associated costs with stock sat on the shelf.
I have spent 5 hours on this already trying to source good pricing, 5 hours of machining time lost although if enthusiasts find such costings acceptable then if they email me direct, I can look at buying the stock in subject to receiving deposits.
It seems no other manufacturer is willing to look at making these for the trade or enthusiast and as such, this is going to prove a major problem for MMM engine rebuilds.

Thankfully, I’m not in need of new rocker shafts (I hope!), but this really doesn’t seem expensive. We recently took our daughters and their families (nine of us in total) out for pizza and the bill was over £200. By comparison, rocker shafts at this price are a bargain. (YMMV, )

It is important to differentiate between something that is expensive and something that costs a lot. |
