How wonderful to see young Adam Forster’s J2 gracing the front cover of the latest edition. This post to share with the overseas forum members that may not receive Safety Fast. Adam took the photograph as well

The car is probably quick round the corners if the negative camber isn't just an optical illusion of a wide angle lens...

Might be taken with a mobile phone Dick. If it is, it’s done a cracking job!

Dick,
It is the angle of the film/sensor plane in relation to the subject that makes the difference rather than the focal length of the lens. Also with longer lenses one would find it rather difficult to be significantly out of line compared with a wide angle lens; that is why the lens focal length is often cited as a problem regarding diverging/converging verticals.
Shift lenses are used for architectural photography which allow the film plane to remain parallel with tall structures facilitating the use of a wide angle with minimal distortion.
The examples below taken from exactly the same spot with the same focal length illustrate how the perspective changes with the angle of the film plane.
The Safety Fast cover shot was taken with a lot of lake and sky above the car, which itself is parked of a backward sloping shingle shore. This gives the same sort of perspective as my right hand example. (note how square the number plate appears to the observer.)
I can assure you that the example car does have a clearly discernible positive camber "in the flesh."
Thus to summarise it is the circumstances of the photograph that give the illusion of negative camber, those circumstances being the upward tilt of the camera, rather than the focal length of the lens.
Nigel.
P.S. You can tell it is still too cold to go out and do anything productive in the garage! |
