I know this is a long shot but somehow the threads on my rear axle got boogered up . I believe they are 40 mm /16 tpi reverse thread. Does anyone know where I can purchase one, have one to sell or borrow ?
Thanks
Dan

Dan,
If you’re talking about the thread on the end of the axle casing onto which the slotted nut for retaining the bearing screws, then I was told by Roger Furneaux that it’s 1 9/16”, 16 tpi (as you said) and with a 55 degree thread angle. They are handed, with the thread on the near/left/passenger side being a left hand thread and the other side being a right hand thread. The 55 degree thread angle shows the thread to be of the Whitworth/BSF family and you might be able to clean the threads up with a thread file which is easily found whereas a die nut is going to be rather more difficult to get hold of.

For example - https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/maintenance-and-outdoor/thread-repair/thread-restorer-bsw-bsf/p/ZT1207263S?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=pla%2B%7C%2BMaintenance%20%26%20Outdoor&utm_term=ZT1207263S&utm_medium=pla_css_3&targetid=pla-1391902231125&loc_physical_ms=20341&dev=c&gclid=CjwKCAjwgqejBhBAEiwAuWHioMTlIFeOtQVB_mcZHQ_QhOU-CZ4eb1_n5TtBxAdqOGUjhFWQgQjRgxoCqI4QAvD_BwE

Bruce and Simon...thank you...looking at the threads i really cant tell what is so wrong to bog down the nut about halfway on. I do now have a thread file and i will slowly work away at it.
thanks

Maybe a silly question but are you confident that the nut is OK?

Dan,
A thread file is a bit of a crude instrument and if the threads have got bent or damaged, it may not be what you need. There is another way of trying to salvage damaged threads and I’ve explained it in an article in the February/March 2021 Bulletin starting at page 26 - https://www.triple-mregister.org/bulletinpdf/pdf/2021%20119%20February-March.pdf

You’ll see that I suggest a torque figure for these nuts of around 60 ft. lbs which is half the value often recommended. I explain my rationale for this in an earlier Bulletin article in October/November 2020, p 17 - https://www.triple-mregister.org/bulletinpdf/pdf/2020%20117%20October-November.pdf

Funnily enough, these articles were also published in the Vintage Minor Register Newsletter and some bloke wrote to say that he had done some 'rough calculations' and was 'comfortable' that 120 ft. lbs was correct. Mind you he didn’t explain his 'rough calculations' nor why he was recommending exceeding the bearing manufacturer's recommendations twofold, but he was apparently an engineer, so that’s alright then.
