Many of you may have heard that there was a serious accident on Saturday evening following Pre-War Prescott.

The accident involved Gaston and Annie Lenaerts, an elderly couple who were visiting for the weekend from Belgium.

After the close of the hill, Gaston and Annie decided to take a tour of the area in their M.G. P/Q special and followed their daughter Ilse and her partner who were in a modern car. They reached the B4077/B4078 crossroads just west of Toddington and followed their daughter across the crossing. Unfortunately, they were struck by an Audi and a Citroen van and received serious injuries. Annie was airlifted to Bristol and Gaston was taken to a hospital in Gloucester. Ilse called William Opie who lives nearby and he immediately responded and provided all the help he could at the scene and afterwards.

Annie suffered serious injuries to her legs and Gaston suffered broken ribs, collar bone and hip. He has since been transferred to Bristol to be with Annie. Annie is undergoing multiple surgeries. Their son Koen has arrived from Belgium to assist.

I will provide a further update in due course, but until then, I have passed on the prayers and very best wishes from all of the VMR/PWP community to Gaston, Annie and the family.

I would also particularly like to pass on grateful thanks to William Opie for all the assistance he offered in the most difficult of circumstances. William would also like to thank all the services at the scene who were unbelievable and professional.

Ian,
Thank you for updating us on this dreadful tragedy. The Lenaerts family were immediately in front of us at signing on and the accident happened only a few hundred yards from where we are staying, so all too close to home. I can't imagine what the family are going through.

Ian, thanks for the posting.

What terrible news.

Gaston and his family have been regular attendees over many years to events and shows in the UK. Gaston always updated me on the progress he was making on the P/Q and of course he brought it to Silverstone last year when I had the chance to look and admire it. How sad that it has ended up in a serious road accident.

I wish both Gaston and Annie a speedy and full recovery.

George

From Brian Rainbow tonight:

"Annie had a 12 hour
operation today, finished around 19-45. They believe that they have saved
her legs which is great news, but a lot of healing required. Gaston is
mobile with a zimmer frame, but in a lot of pain (broken collar bone,
cracked rib and cracked pelvis). I am going down to see them tomorrow
afternoon. Gaston's car and trailer is being recovered to Belgium by his
insurance company, sadly Koens Alfa Romeo broke down today! The family are
very happy with the hospital, they are allowing Ilse, Frank and their
daughter to stay in a room at the hospital as Ilse is helping with
translation when needed. Koen also is staying at the hospital. "

This is such dreadful news.

Wishing Gaston and Annie a comfortable recovery if this can at all be possible with such extensive injuries. Gaston and his family are such regular attenders to so many UK events and are also such nice people.

Please keep us updated on progress Koen and please also let your parents know the whole MMM community is thinking about them

Good news from Brian Rainbow this morning:

"I had an update from Koen [Gaston and Annie's son] this morning. Gaston is being transferred today to an hospital in Turnhout, and Annie is also being transported today to the UZA Hospital in Antwerp. They are both making good progress."

From his son Koen, via Brian Rainbow today:

"My father is at home and learns to cook. He is doing well.

My mother is still in a rehabilitation centre, she is making progress and can stand on her feet but not walk yet.

She must make more muscles. The doctor told us that she can walk again but with a stick or something."

Thanks for following up on this, Ian. It’s good to hear that both Gaston and Annie are progressing, albeit slowly perhaps.
