On 11th of June 1966, after spotting an advertisement in the local paper my mother, along with her brother (armed with small loan from her Dad) raced off to buy her first car, the mighty J2 (I wish I could have had one at 18 too!). Who knew how that one decision would have such a lasting impact, especially on my life (I wasn’t even the remotest winkle back then!) This little car has taken me all over the global, I’ve driven and traveled to places I didn’t even know existed and made the most amazing friends all over the world. One day I should really sit down and write the full story.

On the 19th of December 2023 for the first time in 38 years, 56 years after Mum owned it, and 6 years after I found and returned it to NZ, it is finally road legal here in NZ again. Best Christmas gift I could have ever hoped for and just in time for the MG 100th Rally here in Auckland in a couple for weeks.

The photo’s below we’re taken on the day of purchase.

And these were taken today, safe to car and people have all changed a bit. (Sadly I was a bit rushed by the rain and other family and messed up the angle of the car. I guess I'll just have to do it again one day. )

This one is of me and my son, he's already enjoying it and let’s hope he’ll still have the car in 50 years’ time!

Merry Christmas

Daniel

I’m with Jeremy (JMH) - these J2s do get under your skin and make good family pets! Here’s my daughter at the wheel of what had originally been her grandfather's J2 avant le déluge at Prescott.

We’re all keen to hear the story of your car, Daniel.

Nice Daniel.

Not too sure about the guy in the blue shirt but you can't have everything ;-)

(Don't tell Mike I said that!)

Thanks everyone, and yes there is something very addictive about the J2.

Looks like I have some writing to do!

As a small side note, RBob has had a massive part to play in the story and the cars return to NZ and the road! Just endless help! Thank you.

Hahaha yes, and he has marginal taste in cars (sewing machines really hehe) too. But he did drive all the way across Auckland on Christmas eve to let me redo the photos
