I have seen some triple m cars, mainly racing ones, with what appears nickel plated front axles. Does anyone know if this was a factory option or done by owners in period. It certainly makes for a clean looking car

Nickel and Chrome plating looks nice, but it is very dangeros
for solid steel

Yes, Carl, it can cause embrittlement of the metal below the plating. It was for this reason that Bugatti himself ruled that all axles and steering parts were to be highly polished and lightly oiled. This had the further advantage of beautifying the natural appearance of the metal and certainly looked ‘business like.’
It also enabled these parts to be visibly inspected for signs of cracking and early failure which cannot be seen when hidden by electroplating.

Also in addition to hydrogen embrittlement the polishing process might also effect the strength due to material being removed.
