I have discovered that the J2 engine block 1019AJ that came with the dismantled parts of J2353 & J4129 was originally allocated to J2414 registration number NJ591 . I wonder how did this block travel from J2414 to J4129 via Cyprus ?

Chris,
Given the failure rate of J2 cranks, and the substitution of Ford engines for broken J2 ones, it would be very difficult to trace the history of a bare block. The original engine in my car was replaced just after the war, I think, but goodness knows where the block ended up. Probably in a scrapyard. Remember those?

Thankyou Simon, I visited many scrapyards with my father who owned an SS100 , I even had an SS100 speedometer strapped to my bicycle, wish I had it now…..the speedometer not the bike !

Chris, that is beautiful work you are doing and your engine looks absolutely pristine. What is the bulbous MG casting covering the water jacket? I don't recall seeing one of those before.

Hello Keith, That is an extended water jacket supplied by Vintage MG Parts, I thought that this was an acceptable upgrade. The block has been linished, possibly in Cyprus by the previous owner Michael Bird , he had started the restoration but passed on before he could complete it. I purchased the dismantled parts of the two J2s from his widow and shipped all back to the UK, that was ten years ago. I intend to keep the block in this condition, not to paint in colour.

My pleasure, I am relatively new to MMM, but enjoying the challenges that present. I have owned many classics , all have been very comfortable drivers , but a compromise on speed and comfort has to be an issue, at least I have been advised and this has been the reason why I have stuck with the challenges rather than just sell on.
