I have been contacted by Mr Y who lives in the UK. His Father who lived in New Zealand owned a cycle wing J2 which was imported for him by his Brother from the UK in about 1937. Unfortunately the car was written off in an accident in about 1940 and Peter is wondering if the chassis has survived or if anyone can work out the chassis number from the rego number which was MG1890 in the UK. Peter sent me a charming photo of the car in front of a lovely old English country house which I can email to a member if they would like to post it here for us to see.
Cheers, Matthew. mbmagilton AT msn DOT com |

Hello Matthew, According to records compiled by the late, great Mike Hawke, the chassis number to which U.K. Reg. Number MG 1890 ws allocated, was J2174.
Best wishes, Colin B |

Matthew,
MG 1890 was J 2174 (fitted with engine number 699AJ). Build date was 20/09/32, delivery to University Motors was on 30/09/32 and it was suplied to the first owner, R.H.Purvis on 31/10/32. Colour was Blue/black and it went back to the Factory to have a modified cylinder head fitted in January,1933.
Until your post I don't think there has been any news of this car since January, 1933.

Thank you Colin and John that is much appreciated. J2174 I have heard of! It is owned in New Zealand (well, the chassis at least, as a future project) by Mr R.B. who is well known in MG circles. I will contact both of them. That IS a win.
Cheers, Matthew. |

Since we are on J2s, anybody have any information on 1933 J2, J3017 still with original engine 1815AJ. Build date 3 March, 1933. I have the MGCC files, which don't tell much. Car was imported into Canada about 1965 or ?? I have owned it since 1980, might get it on the road this spring. It does not appear in Mike Hawks books. Anybody have any information? Unfortunately I don't have a UK plate number. Thanks from Canada, Bob |

Matthew, I will check in Dads files when I'm up at the weekend - Thankfully it's all very well referenced & there is just sooo much detail there. If there isn't a pre-war photo of the car I'd love a copy by e-mail to attach. As a general rule his notes cover from build up until a car became known to the register.
Bob, I'll do the same.

Bob,
The dearth of information is because the card file is missing for this car. Build date was 14/03/33 (one of 25 J2s completed on this date) - the Factory must have been really buzzing!
I expect you know that the car was for sale in January, 1939 at Smith Auto Company Limited and a previous owner was a one Oliver Clubine.

Simply amazing! I have had a J2 chassis since about 1987; it came to the North Island NZ from Dunedin a few years earlier with boxes of J parts and some old body sections. The Dunedin owner at that time was selling an assortment of MMM parts. The original brass chassis plate has also survived and states the engine number as John describes. The J parts provenance is unknown as I assume there were more than one J2 dismantled in NZ. The Palmerston North owner who I obtained it from was a known collector of MMM parts.
I will not restore the J2 so a project for someone oneday.

Yes John, I did have the date of 14 March, 1933 for J3017, as shown on the MG records sheet, just 2 finger typed it wrong. I bought the car from Oliver Clubine here in Ontario in about 1980. He bought it from Tom Berent who imported it into Canada from the UK. Interesting, Smith Auto Company originally sold KN0389 from new, which I now own. Where did the 1939 information come from? Thanks, Bob |

Thanks to Matthew for sharing these photos with us.
Here's his quote.
"Here is the picture that Mr Y sent me, quite a lovely photo. I think that is his uncle who sent the car to NZ from England. I would be happy for you to add the photo onto my thread. Maybe we could ask if anyone recognises the building behind? I have also added a pic of Dad and myself in the Montlhery-Le Mans J3 that you may like."
Neat photos Matthew. I hope you didn't mind me posting the second photo. You failed to inform us which one of you is your Dad. ![](images/icon_smile_clown.gif)
Thanks again.
Brian.

Here is another J2 to keep this topic of interest going. This J2 may already be recognized by the register. Here is what I know...... 1] MG J2 was advertised in the Toronto Star summer of 2007. Located in Michigan. 2] Rear axle stamped number was 263 117 3] First owner was John H. from Bristol 4] The bonnet stamping was 2(3)78 CR. The (3) may have been an 8 as I was in need of glasses for up close!!! 5] From UK ownership papers....2878, Reg no. AMC 12, engine # 1640.B5 Papers showed 8 previous owners. 6]MG imported to US 1966. Purchased by owner 1967. 7]1649 72 stamped on block 8]1149 72 stamped on transmission
This car was noted in Mike Hawkes 75 Years of the J2 M.G. I think point #5 pertains to this MG. Mike notes "There is no news of J2878 today."
