Can anybody help me with some information on my 1933 J2.
Registration number YD 8332 chassis number J2281.
I would like to know if this is swept wing type or cycle wing.
As i bought it in bits and it had swept and cycle wings with it.
Looking at information on the net is inconclusive

Charley,
J2281 is a fairly early car probably built in October of 1932. My own J2 (J2247) was built during the very end of September 1932 (probably September 30th). As swept wing J2s did not start until much later in 1933, yours would have come from the factory as a cycle wing example.

Yes the number would make it early.
But it was first registered in 1st December 1933.
early chassis late reg
I would not think in them days they would leave chassis laying around.
This is the problem

No, but remember the car was often registered as of the date of sale, not the date of manufacture. Here is the US, it was not uncommon to have a 1950 car, for example, which was not sold until 1952. Frequently such a car would be titled a 1952. My own TD is titled as a 1951 but it was built in August of 1950. The factory last saw the car in 1950, so it has all of the features of that era.

As I recall, swept wings came in at about chassis number 3440 in 1933.
My J was delivered on 6 Sep 1933 and sold on 6 Feb 1934 so it was not unusual for cars to hang around at the dealers.

Charley, presumably there will be holes in the chassis for the front cycle wing lower bracket to fit - though of course these may have been still on a swept wing car even though unused, or possibly they may have been drilled later. Point is, if they are NOT there it has to be swept wings!

Close, Peter! J3438 was the first swept wing car. Easy for me to remember as my car is 3437, the last cycle wing one which was built to order and first registered on 13 August 1933.
P.S. Charley, get in touch with the Club Office and get the chassis file for your car if it still exists. It could make fascinating reading if early owners had contact with the factory. The file for my car has correspondence from John Thornley to my Dad when he was complaining about various problems he had with the car. |

Charley,
Build date for your car was 04/10/1932 and it was delivered to Welch & Co. Ltd., Bristol (main agent)on 14/10/1932. It may have been used as a demonstrator as it was not sold until 01/12/1933.
It was fully modified to 1934 spec and guaranteed "as for 1934 model" in September 1933. Presumably this would have included, inter alia, the fitting of swept wings, the fitting of the secondary outrigger bearing at the front of the crank and the SU fuel pump.
JOHN JAMES (J3656 - first registered 04/10/1933. It has been 'sleeping' since 1966 but is now showing signs of waking from its slumber and the body tub is presently in the conservatory). |

My J2 J2338 was made in the first week of October 1932, but not sold to first owner till March 1933.
So they certainly did hang about a bit!
I would fully support sending for your car's chassis file
Fascinating reading - a window into the early life of your car
I recently visited the house of the first owner, and found the village garage who sold it 78 years ago.

The MG Car Club http://www.mgcc.co.uk/index.php holds the chassis files that Mike Allison salvaged from a skip some decades ago. If (as expected) yours is available they can supply photocopies of the contents of the file for a very modest fee. The Club is contactable at
