I have a copy of The Autocar dated 25 May 1951 (given to me as it's the week I was born). There are many cars for sale in the 'sports cars' section where the average price for a J or PA was between £200 and £300. However, the best was "K3 type Magnette, road equipped, choice of 2 well-known cars, £595 and £695". Under the superchargers heading in Parts & Accessories a firm was offering "Marshall-Nordic installations, nearly new, for TC MGs, £65; ditto for TA, £55; Centric set for PA MG, £40". Tardis anyone?

They wouldn't take modern money.
You would have been earning £20 p.w. back then, £5 if starting out.
A friend bought a restorable T.35 Bugatti in the early 'sixties, far out of my reach. PA 0627 / BEV 307 was £22-10-0 and was a fair runner. It survives, as does the Bugatti.
Later on, L2023, a runner with a good Riley engine, plus some spares and bits of a J2 came for £ 50 or so, but I could afford it by then. |

Jerry if you really want to weep read my article in the Current Year Book, R Types ranging from £40; £110; £200 & even £300 when fitted with twin cam heads.
As Bob points out those days money had a somewhat different value and I think the older MGs even at those price were beyond the average person probably not long out of education and trying to create a life still reeling in many aspects from WW2. Still at least we still have the Pound.

In 1951 you could buy a reasonable semi [oop north] for that money. So it's the perennial MMMers difficulty K3 lookalike or new house!! |

Purchased my first J2 in 1961. It was a very original old car, low mileage, never been pulled apart or altered, original engine still running well etc - it cost £30. Happy days.

I purchased a pretty good PA in 1958 for £50.
A current long term owner of an L2 purchased it for just over £7.
As Terry states - happy days!
