The following is copied from an email sent to me indirectly from a VSCC member:

It has been proposed that the MOT be discontinued altogether for cars made prior to 1960. On the face of it this would seem a beneficial decision but on investigation it has concerned me enough to write to you all and urge you to sign an e-petition to overrule this ill-conceived idea.

The MOT test ensures all vehicles are maintained to necessary standards. Exempting pre-1960s vehicles will have widespread implications. Say no if you agree with just one of the nine reasons here.

1. Insurance premiums are expected to rise for all enthusiasts.
2. Previously non-transferable, registrations without an MOT could be sold off.
3. If the number plate loophole isn’t closed BEFORE the exemption becomes law, many dormant classics could be scrapped.
4. Trade revenues from parts and labour will suffer.
5. MOT exempt vehicles may find future road use limited.
6. An MOT allows vital trade within understood guidelines of condition.
7. An MOT-exempt vehicle in an accident will be held to greater account, bringing enthusiasts into disrepute.
8. Allowing passenger-carrying commercial vehicles MOT exemption has huge cost implications for their operators.
9. Rising public liability insurance for events attended by MOT-exempt vehicles could become too expensive.

The petition is here:

https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34434

I have added my signature in support; it is up to you whether or not you agree, but please give it serious consideration.

If you agree with the petition, please help ensure that it gets maximum exposure.

Sorry to pee on your parade chaps, but I think a little petition such as you are signing up to, is worth nothing whatsoever, and will have no influence at all on any Government let alone the present one (who I must say, I think are doing a fairly good job in very difficult circumstances.) They have quite a lot on their hands at present, so a petition from a few thousand old car nuts to change something that has just been scrapped, will achieve b****r all.

The real danger is from our "friends" in Brussels who are capable of introducing the most unreasonable and outrageous things which affect us all, without any heed as to what we feel, think or want. Our own MEPS are able to express differing views, but if the majority of the totally undemocratic European Parliament (many of whom have probably never seen nor give a toss for vintage cars) decide to go ahead, they will do so. The only safe thing is for us to get out, and to rule ourselves again as we have done for a thousand years. That is the petition that you should all be signing up to.

By the way, one other thing. Possibly the most safety critical items on our cars are the steering knuckles on right and left hand sides, and the steering drop-arms, and in the event of failure of these results in an accident - quite inevitably. What did the present MOT Testers do to test these vitally important items - apart that is from looking at them and poking them with a stick !

We have the argument above, in Colin's email , for keeping the MOT.
Would anybody like to post a rational argument in favour of scrapping it?
I'm undecided at present.

Are we going to have pages of 'done'? (also in a controversial mood).
