There's a " MG M Type Engine and Gear Box Undertray" advertised on ebay at the moment. Mine doesn't have one of thses and I have never seen one before. Anyone know what it is?
Intriguing! I have a very original 1931 M-type with no sign of an undertray but slightly later models (such as my F-type) have one under the gearbox. Can anyone say (for certain) that M-types had an undertray?
Looking at the pictures of this I cannot see any way that it could relate to the M types that we know and love. The recesses don't seem to correspond to anything on our engines and the upstand part would not either allow the prop shaft or the steering box (depending on which way round you try and fit it)to pass through. I am with Ian when he suggests it is "MG modern" and nothing to do with the 1930s. Even the cardboard box in the background looks modern. I don't think we've just discovered a bit of missing history for our cars! Keith
This looks remarkably like the one (repro) fitted to my P-type, with a few variations. Round indentations allow room for silencer, square box for brake adjuster, and a sliding panel for access to gearbox drain plug. Mine has a lip at the front to prevent hoovering even more cr@p off the road... I suspect the J type one (and possibly the Magnas?) are similar.
Ad suggests it is a new item found in an old MG stock room, priced at £140 orginally - it certainly wouldn't have been that price in 1935! Likely an MMM trader or rebuilder gone out of business...
Latest S&V cat I have (2008) shows one (p/n 2168)at £117.67 (plus vat) so it might be worth a punt if you need one. (That price probably works out at £140 near as makes no odds)
Why do I keep getting @ in the middle of 'cr@p'? I didn't type that!
