Yes,it's J3400. The car holds National British Class I records (1 mile standing start) & Class H (1,000 mile & 2,000km standing start). Thers were set at Pendine & Millbrook respectively.
An awsome little beast & too hot for some!

Yes, it is John Bannell's car that set the following British speed records.

Class I (350cc - 500cc) 1 mile standing start at 39.67 mph driven by Mike Hawke at Pendine Sands in September 1992.

Class H (501cc - 750cc) 100 miles standing start at 62.40 mph and 2000 km standing start at 59.27 mph driven by John Bannell and others at Millbrook in August 1994.

Peter.

PS. I started writing this reply before Jeremy wrote his reply, sorry to repeat what he has said

Peter is being modest in his reply for he was driving his ex Seaman/Straight K3011 at Milbrook.
Other cars - apart from the single seat J2 - were Barry Foster in the "rat" with special lightwight body, Ken Rees' C type also with special body and M Hawke's re-creation of the ex Horton offset bodied K3.
The event is covered in the 1994 Yearbook.
I wuz there as a general lackie!

John wrote a detailed article, published in the 1992 yearbook about building the car, the "mk3" version of the 500cc J2 motor and the trials/tribulations of the build-up to Pendine.

Of course, that year's still available from the library, so you can't download it.

Jeremy You tease with snippets of info. Enlighten those of us without access to 1992 YB. What's the history of the car pre 92? Looks fab

From "40 Years of The MMM Register":

And from "75 Years of the J2 MG"

As it says, an Ex Factory demonstrator, which led a quiet life until Derek Moore aquired the remains & passed them on to John, who was bitten by the record breaking bug before and after Mira (with J2396). The idea was to have as small a frontal area as possible for the 500cc engine which ran first unblown (MIRA) & then blown (Millbrook - 89) in J2396 & was then fitted in "mk3" form into J3400. At Pendine, the car was somewhat bogged down with the 500 motor, but the record was vacant, so bagged all the same. How the 500 reved to 9000 & all the clutch fingers flew off on the rolling road is but one of the development stories. The 750cc engine was fitted for Millbrook in 94 & developed in the car for about a year beforehand.

It is indeed a very nice little car, when I said earlier that it was "too hot for some", it was tongue in cheek because I spent a month as an out-patient after the transfer box burnt my backside at Millbrook, it running just that little bit above blistering temp, I was slow-roasted! Mike Dowley also felt the heat. Dad & John observing the hilarity shoved a lump of foam padding in to protect themselves. Just to add insult to injury, the track-side nurse was old enough to be my Grandmother....

I have done the car an injustice, the records set at Milbrook in 1994 were, 1000 mile standing start at 75.42mph and 2000 km standing start at 75.22 mph. The speeds I mentioned were the speeds of the records broken.

Top photo is John himself & the bottom one is yours truly.

Hard to believe that it's all nearly 20 years ago now & more than 25 since MIRA!

This is interesting. I am at Millbrook, ten miles from my home, on Monday 28th January. It's an MG club organised trip round all the facilities and tracks.
I cadged the J2 picture from Mike's excellent book to flag up a pre war MG link.
This car did the London to Exeter in 1933 and 1934 did it not?
(Yes, it's there in the 40 year blurb)

Two more of the car from that weekend with it's other drivers:

Dad during a stint -

and Mike D with pit crew working away -

As well as the 33 & 34 Exeter, it also I think, did the 35 Lands' end & Singer Sports Trial. The then owner Mr A Soames got himself 6 cylinder MG power by the end of that year & the J2 headed for the quiet life.
