My exhaust manifold had a small piece on the exhaust port that was cracked. I thought brazing would suffice but discovered a company specialising in cast iron welding who tested it and are now tig welding it. There is much to be learnt about how cast iron was forged, the mix of metal, ash, silicone etc makes it a facinating subject.
So don't think welding is not an option.

i had an N type with the typical crack through the water jacket plates repaired by a specialist cast iron repair firm the repair was a success BUT the distortion can be a problem, in my case 15 thou planed off the deck /head face.Geoff
