I have successfully transported the whole car ( dismantled ) back to our house here in Cyprus, everything checked, the whole car is complete as far as I can see. I am bringing home some of the more delicate items in my luggage...I am returning to the UK today. I have the engine block ( stripped )with the numbers on a plate on the side 1019, under this is 72 and to the right hand side is JA , the A is under the J . I have photographs of the chassis number, radiator plate and engine plate and general photos of much of the parts, I will put these on this page tomorrow ( I do not have a link here ).
I am bringing back also two dashboard clusters ( from two different cars, not sure which is correct as they are very slightly different )and the original speedo and rev. counter, both need restoration. See you tomorrow.

Photo of Angela Bird, widow of Michael Bird holding the number plate of the second J2 which is a spares donor, sadly most of the car is gone. Angela's friend Hazel on the left with my wife Linda to the right ( Angela's left ).

The part completed chassis, with the car has come a large amount of brand new spares, some I have brought back ( mainly rubber items )in our luggage. The rest will be shipped in about a months time. All the original trim, seats, door cards, hood frame, ash frame is with the car, the front axle is bent ( article by Michael Bird in Octagon CC Bulletin No. 434 July 2006 ). Everything will be returned, Michael had already fashioned new ash frame parts, and made one new door, he died before completing the second.

Looks a good buy. The instruments are all good. The cluster panels are correct one has the wrong switch the other has the correct rotax switch but it looks as if its really been messed around with it doesn't look much good. You have a early j speedo on the left and the later j speedo on the right. They both are very good and will restore fine.

Thanks Greg, All the car is pretty much in a similar condition, apart from the new items and what Michael bird had already restored. I will be returning to Cyprus next month to further dismantle the chassis, in preparation for shipping.

I paid Angela's asking price of £8000, which included some of Michaels tools ( many were new )and £2,600 worth of new spares ( still boxed ) from Sports & Vintage Motors, so my base price was around £5000, which also includes spares from the donor J2 ( Reg. No. ALX 124 ). Unfortunately the chassis & engine for the donor car is not among the items. Michael bought the two cars in 1961 from an US serviceman who was unable to transport the cars back to the USA. Michael was 21 years old, he dismantled both cars to import into Cyprus with his furniture after their house was built, he never got round to finishing the restoration. His garage / workshop was an engineers dream, milling machine, lathe etc etc..I am sorry that I never got to meet him.

I wish to send the two speedo / rev counters for professional restoration, I am informed that John Marks is no longer taking any new commissions, I have used Speedograph Richfield for my Rover items, does anyone else have a recommendation ? Thanks

You might also try Patrick Henry who did a great job of resuscitating my Speedometer Supply Co rev counter. He's based in Ireland these days and his email addresses are patrickhenry37@hotmail.com and vintageinstruments@hotmail.co.uk. Definitely worth contacting.

I second that Simon, you will not find anyone better than Patrick Henry for the quality of his pad printing to decals and his attention to fine detail. Not cheap but worth every single penny
