Does anyone know where I can get a Lucas 401883 distributor cap from? These were fitted to MG 18/80 as well as L and K types plus other cars. Either NOS or reproduction will be fine. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Ian.

Hello Ian,

Sorry I cannot be more specific, but if you don't get a definitive answer, perhaps try the following web sites, one may have what you are looking for.

If that is the horizontal outlet type for the rotax distributor they are like hens teeth . The vertical outlet with push in ends are more readily available [and far cheaper] Geoff

Hi Ian,
if you don't mind the black color (easily painted brown), and the missing LUCAS Motiv, then you very often can find a offer in ebay with the photo below. Unfortunately I can't discover it in the moment, but I will hang on and let you know when it reappears.

I quite often see these distributor caps for sale at autojumbles although as Geoff says, they are rather like hens-teeth. I don't actually need one myself, but I am always hoping to come across a mug willing to sell me one for £20 or so ! The usual asking price seems to be £75 and upwards.

I see that The Distributor Doctor has now had a batch of the equally rare rotor arms for this distributor made so pssibly he might be working on a batch of dizzy caps. Could be worth having a chat with him.

Incidentally, Lucas had two versions of these rotor arms (the M2799/3 and the M2799/4) which look virtually identical, but on the former the electrode projection is 7/32" long and on the latter, it is 1/8" long. Get the wrong one, and your expensive distributor cap will go bang as soon as you try to start the engine.

I kept an eye on the advertisement, but it did not reappear in recent time.
But the seller was:
ABC Spares, Richard Norton, 32 Hythe End Road, Wraysbury, Middlesex, TW19 5AR
Tel. 01784|481712 E-mail:richardjnorton@hotmail.com
And one of the ebay-offers was:
http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/RARE-NOS-distributor-cap-Riley-12-6-14-6-FREE-UK-P-P-/280504622928
Perhaps he still has some caps?

Ian,

I have one. Black. NOS in the Lucas box. Bought MANY years ago at Silverstone when I thought I had an original distributor in my N type. Been sitting on the shelf ever since. Colin seems to have identified the asking price, plus post & pack of course. Give me a shout if interested.
