I need to have a J2 flywheel posted from West Sussex to Kendal in Cumbria. Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably economical way to do this? What a pity it has never been lightened.
One of the purchasers of the spares I sold used a carrier called Hermes - I think they might operate on a franchise basis. They gave a good service and were much cheaper than some of the bigger carriers.
Hermes have a pretty poor reputation! Some bad reports out there. I personally have not had problems with them but have stopped sending parts with them on the basis of what I have read.
I have frequently had excellent service from APC Overnight - next day delivery and they will collect or you can deliver to one of their depots if convenient. I think a flywheel would be about £12.00-£15.00 at most. Graham R.
Hermes will only send car parts on an at-your-own-risk basis, they lost some electrical parts of mine earlier this year and didn't want to know. Had I described my small package as something else I might have got some compensation...though others have told me that is unlikely!
The sender has checked and it looks like a figure of about £14 to £15 is about the sum I should expect to pay. I understand the flywheel is just under 10KG's . The sender has looked at Parcel Force, UPS and TNT. I have been pleased with Parcel Force so far but I have had little or no experience of UPS and TNT.
I am relieved that such a heavy item is not as impossibly expensive to send as I feared.
If you get stuck for a workable option, and can deliver to Guildford, we are due to travel to the Lakes on Monday 21 July and could be a free carrier to Kendal. Please let me know if this helps.
Ian, that is a really kind offer and very much appreciated but the sender has it in hand to post the flywheel tomorrow morning and I have already asked him to go ahead. Thanks for the thought.
We use DHL, TNT or UPS. We previously sometimes also used Fedex but they are no longer competitive. You can insure with Hermes but it is pretty expensive by comparison.
The flywheel has arrived safely and on time. With some packing it weighed 11.3 kg and Parcel Force charged £15.12. This is a happy result. Many thanks to the sender.
The next phase is lightening but this topic has been well discussed on the Forum. The 'Graham Howell' method is favoured.
