After much digging around I found an old article in a long defunct magazine ('Yesterday's Motorist', this may be the only copy ...) about this mascot. It was apparently 'factory adopted' and sold by University Motors, for the P type. It didn't sell very well but does appear in factory literature (it says here...)- it was available only in 1935.

Apparently there are repros about, but it looks a bit dangerous to me!

Regards,
Graham

I believe the reproduction Midge mascots are marked 'MG Car Co' along the side of the base. Original mascots (which are extremely rare) simply had a registration number stamped on the base. I have also been told that the original mascots came in different sizes but I can't confirm whether this is true. There is a reference to these mascots in 'MG Collectibles' by Michael Ellman Brown. Hope this helps.

Dear All:

I have a Midge Mascot; a small one . Purchased at auction.
This is where the devil starts. Sorry.
So I am fairly sure it a period "Midge".
As already stated there are copies about mostly on ebay and the like.
The best way is to see original Midges.
Copies quickly become obvious.
There are three sizes and variation from batch runs and who made them
I love mine and think it adds to the car.
Hope this helps a little.
All the best.

Have a look in the archives "Midge Mascots" from March 2013.

The article Peter has referred to shows a base number RD 786849. Note the lighter stamping impression of the 68. I am not sure of this number or where it fits with original items. The article states later items.

My Midge have REG 785249 that is stamped on each base, and also the same stamping numbers on the larger Midge.

Midge Mania website also states REG 785249 is correct for original items.

The 2013 post did not produce any conclusions so I hope this time there will be some.

Mark, can you post some more images of your Midge to include one of the base?

The thread has gone cold, disappointing really. May be most of the people reading this forum have not got them?

I will explain my position, there is little information about the Midge.

I obtained my Midges many years ago and don’t remember if they cost a second mortgage or otherwise.

I am not interested in values, I just want to try and get a consensus of what are original manufacture by H J Randall, and if possible how many were made (may be impossible)

The replica ones made in period were made to satisfy a demand as the Randall items may have ceased production. I see these 60, or 70 years old replicas as valuable in their own right as the production numbers may have been small. I would consider these quite valuable as period pieces. Does anyone know who made them and how many? I would call these “period reproductions”.

How can we separate out the recent reproductions that are not valuable? Someone about to purchase one needs the information so an informed decision can be made.

As we get older the information will be harder to get, maybe it’s too late now!

I would be happy to have an original of course but would be equally happy to have a period reproduction as they may be rarer than originals. The period reproductions may never be as cheap as they are again.

My children will take over my memorabilia collection eventually so it would be nice to give them the facts on Midges.
