I need a stronger J2 accelerator pedal return spring but do not know where to find one or how to specify what I want. Can anyone help or advise?

The exact problem which I have was described by Nick Graham in the Technical section under 'MG J2 jerking when accelerating in gear" ( September 2014 now Archived). Nick fitted a stronger return spring and the problem was resolved .

Could you try two of the standard springs in parallel Sam or would that be too strong?

Interested to read this; it looks as though I might benefit from a stronger spring however, what is stronger? would I be right in guessing that if I stretch the existing spring by say 1 inch while attached to a spring balance, I will get its rate, or is it a bit more complicated?

I am sure there is a clever way to work this out. If there was such a thing as a local 'spring shop' I would set the spring on the counter and ask for one the same size but stronger. It seems to be a dark art but Nick Graham found the answer.

Sam, I think the rating is measured by how much "pull" it will take before it begins to stretch. The more coils and the thinner the wire, the weaker it will be and vice versa. So a spring with similar external dimensions but thicker wire will be stronger (i.e. more resistant to pull). If you measure the thickness of the wire you can order a spring with the same dimensions but the next wire size up and by definition it will have fewer coils and be stronger. Or maybe order a couple of bigger sizes to check what works best.

It may be that if you define what you've got, a manufacturer will be able to advise you which size is likely to give you the extra degree of strength you need.

Thanks Malcolm, I will try to order a spring with thicker wire and the same overall dimensions. In the meantime I will have a rummage for additional odd springs and experiment.

Nice to have spring manufacturers over there that you can go to. Lacking any here, I simply bought a spring meant for an old screen door and cut it to the length I needed. Not pretty, but very effective.

Sam,
I tried what I think is a MMM clutch or brake shaft return spring. 2mm wire, about 14mm od and free length 77mm. Much better than a 1.6mm wire one.

Just one of those Springs as the song goes….

Ordinary BMC carb return springs from the 60s/70s, as fitted to Midgets, Bs and loads of other cars work well.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

I fitted a heavier spring this afternoon and will have a test drive tomorrow.

I have just found a found a BMC spring on eBay for under £2 (thanks for the suggestion Jeremy) including postage so I have ordered one and will try it too - it will not go to waste.

Sam, you write that as though it is a "10 available" type item? If so, could you please give the ebay ref number?

This is the one I ordered.

It looks quite short but since the price seems reasonable I will give it a try.
