I'm in need of a Tach/speedo instrument for my L2. UPS lost mine as it was being returned from the repair shop! After a month of searching they want to close the case so it looks like I am out of luck. Any leads on a working unit would be appreciated. I'm in the US and unfortunately can't make it to Beaulieu this weekend. Cheers. Rob
The instrument is common to the J2s so there might just be one out there!
Chris Clark rebuilt my instruments and may be able to help? I have not checked but his details may be listed in the Traders section of the Forum. I can send you the contact details if you are unable to find them.
Thanks for the reply and email George. I have L0280 which I believe started out life as an L1 and most likely a coupe. It is definitely a "driver" and the last several owners were happy to motor about with the tach/speedo inoperative. Any contact details would be most welcome. Cheers. Rob
Friends The J2 and L instruments are similar but different. I think the J ones are tachometers with speeds in third and top gears marked whilst the L ones are speedos with revs in third and top marked. Good luck with your hunt Sven
Rob, the genuine L type rev counter/speedo, has two inner rings of numbers in red and yellow, being for 2nd & 3rd gears. good luck in your search. Nick.
There seems to be a surprising amount of confusion here! The J and L had a speedo with the revs in top and third gear marked in concentric inner rings. Both cars had two different speedos: the early J one was a governor type with the revs for top and third marked with white numerals. The later speedo was a chronometric one with domed glass and the octagonal mask with the revs in top and third marked in red and yellow as described by Nick. It may well be that the L also had the same variations but comparing the parts lists shows only the octagonal mask of the J2 being shared with the later L Type speedo. The speedos themselves have different part numbers.
So it looks like the later J2 instrument will work for my L Type. I think the earlier confusion was with the P Type instrument which is a Tach with the speed indicated in the concentric rings. At least I hope so as that is what I have on my PA.
Thanks for the information gentlemen. The instrument Sven pictured is like the one I had. I appreciate the picture of the early instrument Simon as I was not aware of the change in instrument faces during the J type run. The hunt continues......
