Hi all,
What would be a suitable antifreeze to put in a PA engine?

If you use the 'Search' function for 'antifreeze' and tick the box for archived posts you'll find two pages of threads on the subject.

Many thanks Simon, It seems that antifreeze is not recommended, use just water. I was worried that water would corrode the inside of the engine if left over the winter.

Yes it will, but there's nothing stopping you using a corrosion inhibitor...

I read it rather differently.
There are two types of antifreeze, usually labelled either 'Green' or 'Orange' the latter can also be called OAT.
The one to use in pre-1998 cars is the 'Green' or traditional variety.

Use only IAT type that has a max life of 2 years. Do not use extended life type. Add a corrosion inhibitor such as No-Rosion. Don't use more antifreeze concentration than you need for your expected temperatures. I assume that you have no water pump fitted and rely on thermo-syphon for circulation.

I run on rain water only. Never had problems with corrosion (other than the block side-plates & even those have been on for nearly 15 years). I'm not sure what replacement manifolds are made of, but my block, head, rad etc are all originals & the car has never had problems. just keep it in a garage above 0 deg, flush regularly & don't leave the car idle all winter.

As I have unheated garages and sometimes travel and leave the cars outside overnight in winter, I use the blue type diluted 4:1 in both the MG and the LeaF and change it at the start of every winter. Never had any problems. Better safe than sorry.

If you can't keep it above 0deg you need antifreeze even if you drain everything. There is a bit that stays in the block ready to freeze and sometimes crack the block. |
