I found this photo on ebay of a PB taking part in the 1953 Exeter Trial. I would be interested to hear if the car still exists and how it got on in the trial. Interesting collection of badges on the front. Cheees John Tinley

Sadly the Registration number is not listed in the 2015 printed register.

It does appear on the DVLA database and says that tax is not due so it would appear this car still exists. |

From the picture I thought you could well have meant 1935 instead of 1953, but Donald Cowbourne doesn't list a no. 197 in any of the MCC trials in 1935. Plus PB0385 wasn't registered until 10 April 1936 excluding the 1935 Exeter as a possibility altogether. I've checked against 1936, '37, '38 and '39 as well and against the Land's End and Edinburgh trials, but nothing, no number 197 and no Mr Bentley anywhere either!
The book 'only' includes trials from 1929 to 1939, so I can't look up anything for 1953, presuming that is the correct year after all.
No luck in the 1953 Motor Sport magazines which can be looked up on the internet either, sorry!

Definitely can't be pre war as unless I'm mistaken the horns fitted to the car didnt appear till post war (as used on the TD ) . |

Good spot Ollie! and a bit of Googling suggests that style of RAC badge wasn't introduced until 1946

The dunchers (flat caps) are also more of a 1950s style than 1930s

The badge behind the number plate is an R.A.F. badge made by J.R.Gaunt. It looks like it has the Queens crown (post war edition) i.s.o. the Kings crown (pre war edition) above the emblem so this must be a post war event.

The badge at top right appears to be an MCC badge and the one above the XF in the number plate is an RAF Kings Crown badge so would date it before the Queens Coronation. I have no idea what the badge at top left is? |

I have only just seen the picture of the PB CXF735
To confirm the photo was taken at the 1953 Exeter , the PB driven by R.G. Bailey. He started the event at 1.17am 2nd January, from Stratford on Avon He failed to earn himself an award.

Hello Peter C.
Coincidentally while at Beaulieu this year I bought a set of four Ash Tray Awards from M.C.C. Trials.
1. Exeter Trial 1953. A.C. Westwood. 2nd. Class. 2. Exeter Trial 1953. A.C. Westwood. Ist Class. One make team.
3. Land's End Trial 1957. A.C. Westwood. 2nd CAR Class.
4. Land's End trial.1956. A.L. Westwood. 2nd CAR Class.
I notice that 3. and 4. has noted "Car Class", Would that suggest that 1. and 2. were both for Motor Cycles?
Any information on the Westwood's would be appreciated. It would seem that you have interesting details of the trials.
Thanks.
Brian.

A C Westwood, entrant 319 started in London and drove a side valve E93a type 1172cc powered Dellow. He failed on Simms hence his 2nd class award.
Re the Team Award. He was in a team with E Ridley in an MG TD and N Chantler driving a 2.2 litre Austin, what ever that might have been. According the official results they did not win anything.
Attached photo of my HRG on an earlier Exeter. Tried to add one taken in Jan 1953 too but beyond my capabilities

I have a silver medal of A. C. Westwood from the 1937 Torquay Rally, but he was also in the 1934, 35, 36, 37 and 1938 events. Firstly in Singers and then in a Fiat, but in 1937 in a Talbot but back to a Fiat in 1938. He was also in Singers in the 1934 and 35 MCC Sporting Trials. In 1933 he had done the Gloucester in a the Singer, and again in 1934. In 1935 he did the Exeter, the Lands End the Edinburgh and the Colmore, all in the Singer. For 1936 it was in the Fiat that he did the Exeter, Lands End and the Colmore. Quite a prolific chap!

Hi - this is a photo of my late father Reginald Graham Bailey. I was surprised to find it on here as I have only posted it on Drivetribe and facebook(friend only) He competed in many trials in this great little car, though I believe he didn't do too well in this particular one. i have other photos of the car and of other rallys. I have also got the original radiator cap, some of the car badges off the front and all his notes and receipts for parts and services from the early 50's. The car was first registered in April 1936 and my father bought it in the very early 50s - '51 I believe. I too, would love to know if this car is still around....and if it's for sale! kind regards, Ruth |

Thanks, Ruth,
It would be of interest as well to see good color photos of the badges.
