I bought this picrure the other day. All it says on the back is MG J2, 1982. I think it was taken outside The New Inn at Pridy near Wells on the VSCC Wessex trial. Does anyone know the car?

That is certainly not a J2 and I question whether it is MG at all.

I also do not think the car is an MG.
I just love that very square Austin 7! I found one just like that in running order, plus two open 2 seat 7s, in an old quarry near Basingstoke a LONG time ago. I could have purchased it for 10 shillings (50 p in today’s money) but had nowhere to store it as I was staying with an Aunt during the summer holidays. My parents were in East Africa.

Definitely MG. Shape/ position of rear trunnions, steering wheel, brown gear knob, position of exit of nearside brake cable from chassis, shape of top of radiator.

Agree with Alan, and the rear crosstube does look like J2 to me |

Agreed about the rear cross tube, but none of the petrol tank, door line, dash and instruments, bonnet side panels, tail light, tire size, say J2 to me. If this started life as a J2, it has certainly had a lot of transplants. And the gear shift know appears to be more P-type. J2s never used brown knobs.

My guess is it was a J1 once? Modified for trialing I think you can end up with th MG shown above

Perhaps a rare case of a PA box being fitted to a J to get the lower ratio gears for trials?

I think this is the P engined J2 special that was trialed by Andrew White from Wigton Cumbria in the early 80's. From memory it had a MG reg possibly MG1896?, Andrew is still active (although not with MG's) I bumped into him last week on the Lakeland Trial.

I have a brown gearknob on what I believed was a J2. Is it actually a P-type?

Could be J2115 then, which was last heard of advertised For Sale in Spain (if memory serves me correctly) with special body & a hefty price tag to match having morphed into this:
& yes, it still has a P Type engine & box (with brown gear knob) |

I have been in touch with Andrew White and he confirms that the car in the first picture was his in the early eighties. He bought it as a kit of parts from Colin Cooper who at one time used to race a blown M.G. possibly a six cylinder. The kit bought by Andrew consisted of a J2 frame, a PA engine and gearbox and the Reg. No MG 1896. when it was all put together, he trialled it extensively, mainly in VSCC events, and it certainly did go well, although a bit heavy on replacement diffs. He reckons that his J2 special was the first unblown M.G. to clear Drumhouse on the VSCC Lakeland Trial. He sold the car in the late eighties and moved on to 12/50 Alvis' and Frazer Nash/BMWs and he also helps to run the Northern Trial.
