John, how lucky you are! Your wife helps you to collect parts. My wife only tells me "looking at those cars again, why don't you get a life"!
cheers and buy her some flowers!

Paul: I'm a lucky man, my wife seems to have several second homes, mostly called "Boot Fair" and she occasionally brings home some goodies, like an M.G. blotter, an M.G. ashtray, an eagle mascot which I had on my 18/80 and also a plate with a picture of a J2. I am of course allowed a bit of pocket money each week, but the goodies make up for the paucity of that.
Colin: Thanks, that's interesting, The 'phone number had changed from Central 1362 to Braydon 2161 at some time. I guess that Austin is some little known, obscure make of car. anyone else heard of it?

You have to go back a bit to get the Central phone number! This, from 1923

They were apparently appointed the first distributors in the world for Austin motor cars in 1909

That's good I have several friends with Beans, perhaps I can flog it to one of them, that will supplement my pocket money a bit, most of them have proper cars, in fact for years I was a member of the Bean Car Club.

John as said before lucky man.
Murray and Charlton takes me down memory lane, they were a major dealership in Tyneside.I used to make frequent visits to their parts department in particular for a (wash yeh mooth oot) TR4A I rebuilt after a friend had an argument with a stone wall. They became part of the Dutton Forshaw Group.
I designed and built a Christmas display for them in their Westgate Road showroom one year in the early 70s.
My wife’s father used them as British Leyland supplier to the family garage business in Wooler.
If you wish to have a few extra pennies to supplement the weekly pocket money please let me know, I would be very interested.

Murray & Charleton were founded in 1912. Mr Stanley Murray appears to have been the guiding hand - according to Who's Who in the Motor Trade 1934 edition, he had been "apprntcd. Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co., Newcastle-on-Tyne; motor car design and construction under Major Walter G. Wilson and Mr. C. R. F. Englebach, during manufacture of Wilson Pilcher and Armstrong-Whitworth cars; demonstration and selling Armstrong cars 1911 and formation of part'ship (Murray & Charleton) 1912."

The company became part of Lancashire Industrial Holdings and ultimately part of Dutton-Forshaw Group. Which in turn was swallowed up by Lonrho - aka 'the unacceptable face of capitalism'.

No. Not in my spam box either. Oddly, when I go to check my profile the email address gets overwritten with my username, so there may be something strange going on. You can email me direct on richardarmstrong(at)post.com |
