A recent post on the Forum of the Prewar Minor Network included several 'Manxed' M-types. This particular one intrigued me. Does anybody have any information about the car itself, the name Red Herring, the Tac-Tac-Toe's on the side, the logo on the door, or the lady driver and passenger? It is just such a neat old picture.

What a charming photo!
I think the logo on the door might relate to the Isle of Man?

Looks like an outing for the ladies of The Rover's Return: Ena Sharples at the wheel (no hairnet on a big day out), Martha Longhurst in the passenger seat, Annie Walker standing on the right and Minnie Cauldwell just behind her (she knew her place).

Or could it have a relation with the old Sicilian logo ?
The logo on the door reminds me to the logo which was used by the MG Car Club Italia for a MG meeting years ago in Sicily. Gerhard

Ahh a "bob-tail" M?
The problem with this one in comparison with both the Isle of Man and Sicilian logos is that they run in the opposite direction. Maybe that is the reason for the "Red Herring" inscription. |

I spotted this elaborate railing on Google earth.
It is not quite the same place but this is Circular Road Douglas Isle of Man.
The 'red herring' might be an allusion to Isle of Man kippers.

So who are they then Edie, Nora Batty, Pearl and Ivy or perhaps one is Auntie Wainwright?
As the legs are going the wrong way, do they drive on the other side in The Isle of Man?
By the way Reinout is Tac-Tac-Toe what we call noughts and crosses?

The writing on the side of the car would seem to say “TO OPEN TEAR ALONG DOTTED LINE” and round the rear wheel “PLEASE PASS ???? MANX DEVIL”
The writing partly hidden by the hood looks like “WATCH THIS SPACE”?

Series 1 Morris Eight 'Magna' wheel which was replaced by the 'Easiclean' wheel on later models. I think. |

It's a peddle car equivalent of left hand drive. |
