I was watching Question Time on the BBC last evening to hear that an academic has been successful in leading a campaign to convince Marks and Spencer to change the name of century-old Midget Gems brand of sweets to Mini Gems as the term “midget” can be deemed offensive to vertically challenged people. Apparently a throwback to circuses of old.
Hopefully the smallest model of our beloved Triple-Ms won’t come under similar pressure......
Good grief! Tim

Yes indeed, as the owner of a vertically challenged PA I had wondered about that, too!

Thanks, Robin. Unfortunately, in this case I have to disagree. It is part of a never ending attack on our language and culture. Are we to henceforth change MMM - Midget/ Magna/Magnette to MMM- Mini/ Magna/Magnette? I think not, however, we may be FORCED to change by law if these idiots get their way simply because a tiny minority object to the word ‘midget’ . Chris

Unfortunately Chris in the 21st century that seems to be the way of the world and we dinosaurs are being squeezed out. History, fact or not, must be re-written if you don't like it, as in the Soviet Union and possibly a more recent Russia.

This was initiated by Erin Pritchard lecturer in Disability Studies at Liverpool Hope University who said:
"As someone with dwarfism I know that renaming Midget Gems is not ‘woke’ – it’s long overdue"
She is I think right and, in the alternative, even if I think she is wrong I defer to her as she has dwarfism and I do not. Progress has trade offs and this is to me an accpetable one.
If anyone feels this is offensive to their values they could try synthesising how someone with real cause for finding offence would feel about this.
MG today would today not name a car a Midget.

I feel very sad that Erin Pritchard feels offended by the word midget which I understand the dictionary says has two meanings "a person of extremely or exceptionally small stature" or "something that is very small". If Erin genuinely feels that way surely it can only be if somebody is using the word offensively which is something that none of us could condone. As the long term owner of one of MG's first Midgets I feel saddened that there should be any effort to try and change the meaning of the word which has served us well for years without a hint of offense.
