A friend of mine in Australia was given this photo many years ago with no accompanying information. We are not sure which country the photo was taken in. Would anyone happen to recognise the car and its somewhat unusual modifications please?

I’m pretty sure this is the J2 that was fitted with , possibly , Fiat wishbone independent front suspension. I have a transparency somewhere taken at Silverstone in the late 50s or 60s. of this car which l will try and find . The Marshall blower was painted red , the car was a cream colour . For a long time l thought it was driven by Tony Merrick but that was not the case . |

I labelled my transparency J 3751. J3 MG driven by I Richards . It was photographed at Silverstone in 1961 . It carried racing number 78 and is definitely the same car as in the old photograph . My picture was taken at a VSCC meeting judging by the other cars in the background. Where l got the chassis number from or drivers name l cannot now remember but l hope it is correct for historical purposes . Sorry but l am unable to upload photos. Now in Malcolm Beer’s collection since 1963 l think |

Nick. Thank you , l will contact you directly shortly. This particular picture is on a transparency I have so that may be more difficult.
Matthew . You are welcome . Have you noticed that there is something chain driven behind the blower . Maybe it is the blower but I suspect that is driven off the nose of the crankshaft as is usual . I’m now curious to know who I Richards is . Can anybody help? |

Could that chain be driving a dynamo?
Is the radiator set back to accommodate the blower?
cheers

Ray. According to "The Hawke Book", Mr Ian Richards of Smethwick bought J 3751 from F G Lomax in 1959 and kept it until November 1961 when he sold it to Tony Merrick. He raced it at VSCC Silverstone in July 1959, July 1960 and July 1961 and also drove at VSCC Prescott in the same three years.

Peter . Yes, it could well be driving a dynamo and the radiator does seem to be further back than normal . Very difficult to be sure though .
Colin . I should have thought of looking in Mike’s book . It could well be where l got the chassis number etc from some time ago .. I remember the single seater J3 probably when Bruce or Malcolm raced it briefly in the 60s . Forgotten it was the J3 in the photo . It’s all a long long time ago ! . Many thanks to both of you . |

Well done Onno ! ! . The last picture shows , apart from the beam axle , that 12 inch brakes were fitted . |

Here's J3751 as it appeared in Autocar, photographed at an auto show in Scotland where it served to introduce the J3 model. It was painted primrose/black.
