L2069 was registered WP4560 in September of 1933 (red with red interior). George Eagle has kindly sent me the information on the factory file which take the car up until late 1934. In late 1944 the car appears in Melbourne Australia now painted black, still with its UK plates and a GB touring plate and with "Isle of White M.G. Magna" written on the side of the bonnet. The Australian history is now sorted. Does anyone have any information on WP4560 from late 1934 or how it came to be in Australia?

Thanks

Andrew

Talking to the current owner tonight..... apparently he was contacted by a fellow in 1989 who claimed that the car was raced at the Douglas Circuit on the Isle of White. Are there any records of an L2 there pre-war?

regards,

Andrew

Hi Dave... As you are pointing out, the Douglas Circuit is on the Isle of Man..... I was directly quoting what the owner told me (he's in his mid 80's and had written down on a scrap of paper what he was told 35 years ago). Were races held on the Isle of White in the 1930's?

That would be for someone else to answer Andrew however, it's in fact the Isle of Wight, unless there's another I've never heard of!

Cheers,

Dave

Funny you should say that Dave.....there is another Isle of Wight, sort of.

Surely this is something to do with the Isle of Wight hotel at Cowes on Phillip Island where they held the Australian Grand Prix

This was from behind the hotel in the 1928 event

Thanks Kevin and Dave.... yes sorry... Isle of Wight! As far as we've been able to find, nothing to di with the Hotel at Cowes..... (Phillip Island). The car was not registered in Victoria till 1944 and the rego card says Ex-NSW.
(The Rego papers give the same date though nothing about NSW).
So the Douglas circuit thing may be a furphy .......
Last owner in the UK that I have info on was a G.R. Clark in late 1934

regards

Andrew
