Bit of a long shot I expect, but does anyone have or know where I can buy a set of Q type brake drums that are made out of the correct cast iron and actually work! Thanks, Paul |

Hello, Paul. It might be just as easy to get a set machined up from solid billets, choosing the correct grade of material, then you could include some nice cooling fins? Regards, Chris |

I fitted Alfin drums to my L2, the braking was much improved. The drums are made by Typecast Ltd. I also think the drums look good on a Triple-M car. No connection, just a satisfied customer. George.

I believe that Tom Dark Engineering are able to supply new 12" brake drums to Q Type profile. I am interested in getting one set. Perhaps Tom could make a few sets if several of us are interested.

How does the Q profile differ from the regular profile? |

Hello, Paul. I can also recommend the drums mentioned by George but I thought you wanted the original Q pattern drums. Chris |

What was the original construction of these drums? At the same time Riley (and hence for ERA) manufactured their racing drums from Magnesium alloy ("electron") and shunk a cast iron liner into them with a limited number of radial set screws to avoid them slipping. This was also used by other manufacturers and makes a huge saving in unsprung weight (vs even a pressed steel drum). |

Thanks, Nigel. I’m pretty sure these drums were made by Holden and Hunt and were a one piece drum, i.e.. no liner. They were also quite heavy which had the benefit of being very effective, I believe. Chris |

So very similar to these KN drums from a previous topic:

The rib towards the open side of the drum will go someway towards stopping it from dishing under heavy use, so may be more for that purpose than cooling. |

Hello, Duncan. The KN drums were 13” and Q drums 12” otherwise identical. (Same maker) Chris
Note:- original drums were not supplied with the lightening holes! |
